For example, I don't like Will Ferrell in his typical roles. Oh they just drive me batty.

But. I do love Stranger Than Fiction. It's such a cozy movie.

So then how are you confused by them sharing their faith this way?

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Did I say I was confused?

I am put off by it, I find it concerning, inappropriate, performative, disingenuous.

You show you are confused by the last line in your post. Why would you think this would need tocome from the clergy given your history of fundie christianity? Were you in one of the weird ones that doesn't evangelize?

No, its because he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Has he gone to seminary?

Has he been ordained?

Is he certified in any kind of theological field?

To my knowledge, no, he isn't.

He's no different from any other celeb promoting any other thing which they barely understand, like Madonna with Kabala.

I find it weird precisely because I would be more inclined to listen to an actual expert over a popular, pretty face.

...

I am not confused in the sense of 'why would he do this?'

Thats easy: He is being performatively, publically Christian, which ironically, is something you can find scripture to tell you that that's not a thing you should be doing.

...

But what is a Protestant doing promoting Lent, anyway?

Its fucking wierd, it would be like Marky Mark promoting Mormon diet restrictions.

Very, very rare to see any kind of ecumenism coming from American Protestant Christians, they usually hate the fuck out of Catholics, or just barely tolerate them, call them polytheists and the Church of The Beast after the Catholics have left the room.

Are you being honest about your experience here or was your church so incredibly farfrom the rest of the faith that ypu did notcelebrate Lent? That's really uncommon.

Uh, well, I am being completely honest, and I also think that American Protestants not celebrating Lent is actually quite common.

https://religionunplugged.com/news/2025/3/4/new-study-shows-most-americans-skip-lent

Catholics are more likely than Protestants to say fasting from a favorite food or beverage is part of their practice during Lent (55% vs. 38%).

That is to say, a supermajority of American Protestants do not seriously celebrate Lent with actual fasting.

My particular upbringing?

Yeah, also in line with this study, we had an Easter themed special service, with particular verses for reading, but we did not call it Lent, we just called it Easter Service, we did not fast.

So, yeah, I am assuming you are either Catholic or European, as... you'd have to be out of touch with American Protestants to think its 'really uncommon' for them to not celebrate Lent... when the reverse is true, its actually really common for that to happen.

Leaning also toward Catholic given that you're really concerned about Lent, and your user name is, as best I can tell, a play a common Catholic phrase, in Latin.

Roughly: 'Where are you going, mankind?', right?

As juxtaposed against I think Peter's 'Quo Vadis Domine?' or 'Domine, Quo Vadis?'

This is a bit more informative regarding your statistic

"Those who rarely or never attend a religious service are the most likely to ignore Lent (89%)."

So it's really non-devout people who arent doing it.
