A community dedicated to making fun of Ea-Nasir, a Sumerian merchant circa 1750 BC, who sold exceptionally poor quality copper.
I'm pretty sure the adage never meant to imply anything about an afterlife. It's not about souls "ceasing to exist", it's about the lingering effects of our life beyond our death. I always read it as intended to comfort those facing the finality of death, or dealing with the death of someone else.
