I think the bigger difference is "I don't believe but I also don't think others are wrong" is a kind of mentality often. I think that and people are used to seeing self-proclaimed atheists being assholes loudly and go "well I'm not that". Atheism got fucked over by people who just want to be dicks to religious folks.

most online "atheists" i encounter are doing the exact same dogmatic fundie bullshit turned in the other direction, complete with contrived misinformation, cherry-picked statistics, and intellectually dishonest "gotchas". if they actually cared they'd take the backfire effect into account instead of souring the discourse and making everyone dig in their heels.

Atheism, at least the variety that's popular online, is functionally a religion unto itself.
