psychedelics (which are drugs, yes) can be a very potent and most useful tool for the first parts of this process, and it can be quite an experience.

many people mistake this experience for some kind of spiritual enlightenment and assume they're done growing for having had it.

as an aside, clinical application of psychedelics is being taken MUCH more seriously these days, it is foolish of you to be so dismissive of drugs just for being drugs. someone has done you a great disservice.
