Tl;dw GM specified 0w20 oil for a 420HP engine destined - in theory - for heavy hauling. The crankshaft bearing surfaces may not have been machined to the specified smoothness and the light oil provides insufficient film thickness to compensate, which can lead to premature bearing failure.

GM specifies 0w40 oil for this engine in applications not subject to CAFE standard, and has now modified the specification for these trucks to 0w40 as well. It’s unclear what the change will do to their CAFE adherence.
