Because generally, modern authoritarian regimes hold faux elections. So there will be elections. They'll just likely be rigged.
Agree, no way they will just cancel elections. They will just fix them and lie about it like Putin and Lukashenko do, or if they can't they'll at least try like Orbán and Vučić.
