If it was 1931, wouldn't that be George V still? Did Edward have time to do anything other than muck around with a politically unacceptable woman and make awkward gestures towards Germany?
I suppose it could have been an initiative by the then Prince of Wales and the proper naming convention is "Edward VIII" as we say "Queen Victoria was born in 1819".
I believe we're calling that a "Roman salute".
