The Roman Report: Modern Headlights Are Too Bright (Regular Car Reviews)
If you dislike being blinded by extremely aggressive headlights or other LEDs, this is the place to vent or organise!
It's a global issue.
As a specialist in lighting, I can tell you that the people designing the headlights don't know shit about optics for LEDs. They're literally designing for arc lamps and only using reflectors; basically using the same optics that you used for the old lamps and shoe horning in the LEDs.
LEDs emit light in whatever direction they're pointed at and the emitting surface area is tiny, which makes it extremely glarey. Right now, the headlight diffusers are clear, and some LEDs are aimed at reflectors which act like mirrors. This is what makes it very glarey.
What car manufacturers need to do is use optics to bend the light so that it's aimed at the ground, not forward. They'll never do it though; costs too much money.
The only way to change this is for governments to push policies.
