Considering that there was an assassination attempt there not that long ago, it's not surprising they increased security.
An assassination attempt was thwarted. The attempt itself never took place.
Planning to shoot the president is different than actually shooting at him.
Also putting on my conspiracy hat here for a moment. I think the assassination attempts were setups. Including the one who supposedly got his ear.
He did literally get shot though.
He got nicked by some shrapnel that did so little damage that you couldn't even tell it ever happened when his ear diaper came off.
You literally cannot come closer to having your brains blown out and live to tell the tale. To downplay that as if it wasn't a big deal is ridiculous and unreasonable.
Closer would have been actually being grazed by a bulllet...
