I'm gonna guess they were calling you a liberal. In the context of leftist politics or any relevant literature since 1848 or so, liberal means you support the capitalist mode of production. When Mao wrote the pamphlet "Combat Liberalism", he wasn't advocating a really aggressive style of liberalism, and he certainly wasn't advocating combating liberalism with conservatism.
