Women’s groups took to the streets this Sunday across several cities of Brazil to demand that the National Congress vote on and immediately approve Bill 896/2023, scheduled for August, which equates misogyny with the crime of racism.

The demonstrations were spearheaded by the Ascent for Living Women (Levante das Mulheres Vivas) movement and took place on August 2 ahead of the resumption of legislative activities. The main objective was to pressure the speaker of the Federal Chamber, Representative Hugo Motta, to bring the bill to a vote within the next 15 days, specifically between August 11 and 12.

The protests were organized in 10 states across the country, including the capital cities of São Paulo (Avenida Paulista), Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, João Pessoa, Boa Vista, Curitiba, and Campo Grande and the cities of Medianeira, Ponta Grossa, and São José.

Irina Cezar, a member of Levante das Mulheres Vivas, stated in an interview with the program Es de Mañana on Radio Brasil de Fato that support for the bill is widespread. The movement engaged in dialogue with legislators from the left, right, and center, securing support from parliamentarians across various ideological sectors, including members of parliament and activists.

The legislative text was unanimously approved by the Senate in March and sent to the Chamber of Deputies, where it remained stalled without a scheduled vote. It includes a report prepared by federal deputy Tabata Amaral and awaits debate in plenary session following its approval as an urgent matter in early July.

The passage of this law seeks to establish a legal framework for violence against women that protects collective rights, an area not covered by current legislation. Cezar emphasized the urgency of the law given the discourse disseminated by digital content creators that promotes the subordination or harassment of women, behaviors that lack adequate legal definition in current criminal law regarding collective violence.

From the movement’s perspective, collective protection has a direct influence on reducing individual attacks.

Criminalizing hate speech reduces violence against women as a collective, thus decreasing the intervention of the judicial system, police action, and the burden of prosecution in Brazil.

Infantino's proposal was later dealt another major blow when North America's soccer body Concacaf joined European counterpart UEFA in rejecting the plan.

The decision of UEFA's 55 members means that major nations including Germany, France, England and world champions Spain would not participate in the men's or women's World Cups as long as FIFA's proposal remains active.

"UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions," UEFA said in a statement.

Following its own meeting later in the day, the 41-member Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football said it had also rejected the proposal.

Concacaf members include 2026 World Cup hosts the United States, Canada and Mexico. The U.S. Soccer Federation wrote on social media that it "stands with Concacaf and its members."

Infantino revealed plans earlier this week for the sale of a stake in FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE) that would raise $20 billion in exchange for influence over future World Cups including broadcasting and commercial deals linked to the tournament.

The effort is being bankrolled by Joshua Kushner, the brother of Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law.

Amid rising tensions over the US president’s push, Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Tuesday told a joint press conference with his Danish counterpart, Mette Frederiksen, that the island would not be owned or governed by Washington.

“We are now facing a geopolitical crisis. If we have to choose between the US and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark, Nato and the EU,” Nielsen said, adding that the island’s “goal and desire is peaceful dialogue, with a focus on cooperation”.Trump’s pursuit of the island was also a matter of “international law and our right to our own country”, he said.

The Chinese Communist Party is not only a perpetrator of grave violations of human rights within China and of transnational repression abroad. It is also a major facilitator of, and accomplice to, mass-atrocity crimes committed by other dictatorships.

It has enabled Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine, helped keep Kim Jong Un's regime in North Korea alive and provided a lifeline to the military junta in Myanmar.

It is in Myanmar that the CCP's influence is currently perhaps most significant dangerous, but also overlooked. Beijing sees Myanmar not only as its backyard but as a crucial geostrategic playground vital for securing its interests. It seeks "stability" in the war-torn country, not because it has any concern for the welfare of the people of Myanmar but because it wants to protect its economic pursuits: border trade corridors, infrastructure investments, access to rare earth minerals, jade and energy. And most significant of all, its maritime ambitions.

Crucially, China wants access to the Bay of Bengal. And if it secures that, alongside the Malacca Strait and the South China Sea and eventually the First Island Chain by seizing Taiwan, then its dominance in the region and ability to challenge the U.S. is achieved. Myanmar is key to these maritime ambitions. The China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and Myanmar's place in Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative are crucial factors in the CCP's strategy for global dominance.

For all these reasons, China is the puppet master behind Myanmar's current fake elections. On Dec. 28, the military held the first round of voting, to be followed by a second round on Jan. 11. But the election is a charade, a sham designed to legitimize an illegal, illegitimate, criminal regime.

Moreover, much of Myanmar's population is disenfranchised. Elections are only taking place in military-controlled areas, and even there turnout in the first round was estimated at little more than 50%. Entire regions under the control of the pro-democracy or ethnic armed resistance groups are excluded, including almost the whole of Rakhine state. The Muslim-majority Rohingya people, who were stripped of their citizenship by a previous dictatorship in 1982 and rendered stateless, and have endured a genocide over the past decade, are completely shut out of the elections.

Although China was initially displeased with the Myanmar regime immediately following the 2021 coup, for the past year Beijing has intervened to prop it up. Nervous about the prospect of the junta's potential collapse, China has pressured ethnic armed groups operating on the Chinese border with Myanmar to agree to ceasefires with the military, and even return territory they had captured, particularly in areas where China has economic interests such as mining concessions. It should be no surprise to anyone who follows the CCP to know that Beijing prefers a human rights-violating dictatorship that it can influence and that is more likely to protect its interests to a democracy that it perceives as more pro-Western.

China's dominance in Myanmar is a profoundly malign influence for the region and the world. Its exploitation of rare earth mining has resulted in toxic pollution of rivers not only in Myanmar but in neighboring Thailand. The role of Chinese organized crime syndicates in running scam centers, drug trafficking and human trafficking is a threat to regional and global security. Its patronage of the sham elections and provision of arms, jets and fuel makes it an accomplice to the military's atrocities. And its ambition to control the Bay of Bengal make its role in Myanmar a geopolitical threat.

The U.S., the U.K., the European Union, Canada, Australia, Japan and ASEAN need to wake up to this danger -- fast. They must coordinate a response, rejecting the sham elections, redoubling support for pro-democracy forces in Myanmar, countering China's influence and ultimately holding Beijing accountable for facilitating the junta's crimes. As the international community prepares to respond to the fake elections in Myanmar over the coming weeks, it cannot ignore the biggest elephant in the room: China's malign influence in the region.

China launched its most extensive war games around Taiwan on Monday to showcase Beijing's ability to cut off the island from outside support in a conflict, testing Taipei's resolve to defend itself and its arsenal of U.S.-made weapons.

The Eastern Theatre Command said it had deployed troops, warships, fighter jets and artillery for its "Justice Mission 2025" exercises to encircle the democratically governed island, conduct live fire and simulated strikes on land and sea targets, and drills to blockade Taiwan's main ports.

The live-firing exercises will continue on Tuesday across a record seven zones designated by China's Maritime Safety Administration, making the drills the largest to date by total coverage and in areas closer to Taiwan than previous exercises. The military had initially said artillery firing would be confined to five zones.

China's electric vehicle (EV) industry captured half its domestic market in just a few years, crushing sales of gasoline-powered vehicles from once-dominant global automakers.

But foreign players were not the only losers. Many Chinese legacy automakers also watched their sales collapse – and responded by flooding the world with fossil-fuel vehicles they could not sell at home.

While Western policymakers have focused on the threat of China's heavily subsidised EVs, protecting their markets with tariffs, US and European automakers face greater competition from China's gas-guzzlers in countries from Poland to South Africa to Uruguay. Fossil-fuel vehicles have accounted for 76% of Chinese auto exports since 2020, and total annual shipments jumped from 1 million to likely more than 6.5 million this year, according to data from China-based consultancy Automobility.

The boom in China's gasoline-powered exports is driven by the same EV subsidies and policies that wrecked the China businesses of automakers including Volkswagen, General Motors (GM) and Nissan by underwriting scores of Chinese EV makers and igniting a devastating price war, a Reuters examination found. Aziz Isa Elkun couldn't bear to watch footage of Chinese leader Xi Jinping celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region this week.

Livestreams from Chinese state media showed Xi receiving a red-carpet welcome as locals sang and danced in traditional Uyghur dress.

Elkun fled Xinjiang nearly three decades ago after being persecuted by the Chinese government.

"I couldn't dare to watch. It was just a second or two… and I stopped," said 56-year-old Uyghur poet, now based in London.

Under Xi's rule over the past decade, mass detention and heavy surveillance of ethnic Uyghur groups have intensified in Xinjiang.

When faced with criticism from abroad, Beijing framed the clampdown in the region as counterterrorism.

During his three-day visit to Xinjiang this week, Xi called for "every possible effort to uphold social stability."

The Chinese president also met with representatives of all the ethnic groups, expressing hopes "that everyone would join forces and move forward together to build a beautiful Xinjiang," according to report by the Xinhua news agency.

At the same time, he also hailed the Communist Party's ethnic autonomy system as "entirely correct" and "effective."

Russia is selling military equipment and technology to China that could help Beijing prepare an airborne invasion of Taiwan, according to an analysis of leaked Russian documents by a U.K.-based defense and security forum.

The Royal United Services Institute’s analysis is based on around 800 pages of documents, including contracts and lists of equipment to be supplied by Moscow to Beijing, from the Black Moon hacktivist group, which previously published some of the documents online. It does not identify its members but describes itself in a manifesto as opposed to governments that carry out aggressive foreign policy.

The authors of the RUSI report shared some of the documents with The Associated Press and say they appear to be genuine, although parts of the documents may have been omitted or altered. AP is unable to independently verify their authenticity.

The mix of completed and apparent draft Russian documents reference meetings between Chinese and Russian delegations — including visits to Moscow — and payment and delivery timelines for high-altitude parachute systems and amphibious assault vehicles. They suggest that Russia has begun work on the products to be delivered but don’t contain direct evidence from the Chinese side that Beijing has paid any money or received any equipment.

The authors argue the equipment could be used to invade Taiwan. Under President Xi Jinping, China has embarked upon a broad modernization program of its armed forces with the goal of transforming it into a “world-class” military by 2050.

Chinese drone experts have flown to Russia to conduct technical development work on military drones at a state-owned weapons manufacturer that is under Western sanctions, according to two European security officials and documents.

The Chinese experts have visited [Russian] arms maker IEMZ Kupol on more than half a dozen occasions since the second quarter of last year. During that time, Kupol also received shipments of Chinese-made attack and surveillance drones via a Russian intermediary, according to the documents and two officials.

Kupol had developed a new drone, the Garpiya-3, in China with the help of local specialists. Now the news agency is the first to report specific details of the extensive involvement of Chinese experts in tests and technological work on military-use drones inside Russia.

The officials, who asked that neither they nor their organisation be identified due to the sensitivity of the information, said the collaboration suggested a deepening relationship between Kupol and Chinese companies in developing drones - which have proven to be critically important to Russia's war in Ukraine.

The documents, including business invoices and bank statements, showed that Kupol received more than a dozen one-way attack drones last year produced by Sichuan AEE, a Chinese drone maker.

The drones were supplied by Russian defence procurement company TSK Vektor, which is under U.S. and EU sanctions, according to the officials and documents. TSK Vektor and Sichuan AEE did not respond to requests for comment.

DELIVERIES OF CHINESE ATTACK DRONES

A letter from TSK Vektor to Kupol reviewed by Reuters showed that in the second quarter of 2024 the procurement company billed the weapons manufacturer for more than half a dozen drones produced by AEE. The European sources requested that specifics of the letter, as well as the other documents shown to Reuters, be withheld, including their dates.

An AEE corporate document detailing shipments to TSK Vektor, seen by Reuters, confirmed the delivery of the A140 and A900 one-way attack drones. It also listed more than half a dozen other drones - the A60, A100 and A200 - due for delivery.

Kupol reports [...] describe flight tests of the A60, A100 and A200 drones at the Chebarkul military test site in Russia's Chelyabinsk region in the last quarter of 2024.

A group of Chinese experts visited Kupol's facilities in the city of Izhevsk to assemble the drones and train Kupol staff to use them, a Kupol document said. The experts then visited Chebarkul, it added.

Airline bookings seen by Reuters showed the Chinese experts were due to fly out of Chelyabinsk the day after the tests.

SECOND CHINESE COMPANY SUPPLIED DRONES In another Kupol link to a Chinese drone manufacturer, a flight test report approved by the Russian weapons manufacturer and TSK Vektor assessed the performance of an HW52V drone - made by Chinese firm Hunan Haotianyi - in the third quarter last year.

The HW52V is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone that can be used militarily for intelligence, surveillance and reconaissance, and as a strike drone, the European security officials said.

Air tickets seen by Reuters showed that Liu Mingxing, the CEO of Hunan Haotyanyi, and Artem Vysotksy, head of TSK Vektor's drone department, flew out of the Irkutsk airport in Siberia in adjacent seats in June following the last day of an event where the company's drones were displayed.

Xinjiang grows about 90% of China’s cotton, and at least one-fifth of the world’s, and Aksu prefecture is Xinjiang’s cotton-growing heartland.

As a result, many of China's most important textile companies, such as the Esquel Group, have set up farms and factories across Aksu.

But an enormous trove of evidence, compiled from eyewitnesses and survivors, government documents, state media reports, and social media footage, shows that a system of severe repression and forced labour underpins the region’s cotton industry.

Some, including Seanad Éireann, have described the system as a form of genocide. A landmark report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, published in 2022, concluded that China’s widespread human rights violations in Xinjiang could constitute crimes against humanity.

Uyghurs who have fled China recall discrimination as being ever-present throughout their lives, but, under President Xi Jinping, the system of repression has escalated enormously.

A system of state-backed forced labour, meanwhile, has seen millions of Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities transferred to work both inside and outside of Xinjiang, with many thousands forced to work in the cotton industry.

State-imposed forced labour is intrinsic to the Chinese government's broader repression of the Uyghur people, and it facilitates forcible migration, familial separations, mass surveillance, land expropriation, cultural erasure, and resource exploitation.
