Did we ever really need a phone on our wrists?

As soon as I held the Pebble Round 2 in my hand, I suddenly realized what I’d been missing for the better part of a decade. I’ve always felt smartwatches should supplement, rather than supplant, your phone, but that’s an attitude that feels almost quaint these days.

  • Yesterday, Pebble watch software was ~95% open source. Today, it’s 100% open source. You can download, compile and run all the software you need to use your Pebble. We just published the source code for the new Pebble mobile app!
  • Pebble Appstore now has a publicly available backup and supports multiple feeds, providing long term reliability through decentralization. We’ve launched our own feed and Developer Dashboard.
  • Pebble Time 2 schedule update (aiming to begin shipping in January, with most arriving on wrists in March/April)
  • New Tick Talk episode #4 is up, with Pebble Time 2 demos!

Not sure if this is already known, but if you're like me and have Android and want Musicboss, Autoapp, etc on your shiny new watch, and have no patience, use Micropebble instead.

Install the new Pebble app, do the setup as usual. This will ensure firmware is installed.

Remove watch from bluetooth.

Install Micropebble. https://github.com/matejdro/microPebble/releases

Connect.

Disconnect watch in Pebble app (if you leave it connected it will do strange things like install apps from both services)

Install your apps from .pbw files

https://apps.rebble.io/en_US/watchapps?dev_settings=true (This link exposes .pbw downloads for each app)

So far most of my apps work. Voicenote is a nogo. The old version of Nav works, as does Music Boss,

and Autopebble (The most important)

Haven’t seen this mentioned here yet, so good news for all iPhone users who are still wearing their Pebble. Enjoy the first and greatest of all smart watches, in full glory even in 2025!

...but I might have made the score of the century. £30 the lot. They all boot up happily with 5v power supplied with a couple of Dupont wires and hold at least a little bit of charge. Replacement USB cables and straps ordered, so full testing will need to wait until then.

I'm replacing the Pebble Time Round battery using the replacement battery from ifixit and following the guide in the URL. Everything works except the adhesive is basically gone. Given the adhesive is gone the watch won't fully stay closed which is not ideal.

Does anyone have recommendations for what adhesive to use? I've seen some older Reddit thread recommendations for Sugru among other things. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

My main goal was to test the first version (EVT1) of the circuit board of the new watch, and that went well!

I’m not ready yet to share any schedule/timelines or further details about the new watch we’re building. I want to get answers to a few more supply chain questions before sharing more.

Open source development of PebbleOS is going well! 92 new commits since Google released the OS.

Rebble is running a hackathon this week - learn more at rebble.io/hackathon-002

just re-setup my watch (lemmy.horwood.cloud)

I do hope they update the mobile app soon, but still love the pebble interface and lack of fitness stuff

We’ve already got PebbleOS compiling and running on real hardware.

We’re targeting a new chipset - nRF52840.

I'm flying to Shenzhen next week to meet with factories and suppliers.
