So that's bad, yeah, but just how bad is it? With help from Google and The Numbers' movie comparison feature, I can tell you this: It's really bad.

I present to you...

An Incomplete List of Shitty Videogame Movies That Made More Money Than Borderlands

(in no particular order)

  • Warcraft ($439 million)
  • Max Payne ($88 million) Doom ($59 million)
  • Street Fighter ($99 million)
  • Assassin's Creed ($241 million)
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ($336 million)
  • Hitman ($99 million)
  • Mortal Kombat (but Mortal Kombat is actually good) ($122 million)
  • Need for Speed ($194 million)
  • Five Nights at Freddy's ($297 million)
  • Uncharted ($401 million)

One big-budget, big(ish)-cast Hollywood film Borderlands managed to beat, which I bring up only because I paid good money to see it in theaters and I'm still sore about the whole thing, is Wing Commander, an utterly execrable celluloid waste of time and effort that bumbled to $11.5 million globally. Frankly I'm surprised it did that well.

An intriguing new film is on the cusp of being released in the UK – and it might just be the cult hit of the year.

...

The film is titled Strange Darling, and it’s been taking America by storm since its limited theatrical release in August.

Written and directed by JT Mollner, the horror thriller, shot on location in Oregon, is divided into six non-linear chapters and focuses on a liaison between a man and woman (played by Kyle Gallner and Willa Fitzgerald) that devolves into something more sinister.

To say any more would be to spoil the film’s surprises, but, among those who have seen the film, there have been a lot of questions about whether the story is true. Mollner has shied away from confirming either way, simply saying “perhaps” it might be.

...

Reviews have been extremely positive, with the film amassing a score of 95 per cent on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. ABC News’s Peter Travers wrote: “Summer just saved its thrillingest thriller for last. You won’t know what hit you,” while Fico Cangiano of CineXpress called the “twisty" film "one of the biggest surprises of the year”.

Another fan of the film is Fede Alvarez, the director of Alien: Romulus and the 2013 Evil Dead remake, who wrote on X/Twitter: “It’s been years since I saw a film with such a great twisty story! So good, so cool. Don’t miss this gem.”

There's a common consensus that horror movies aren't scary anymore, but that's not necessarily true. A lot of the time, many horror movies are either missed, fly under the radar or (thankfully) do end up getting the recognition they deserve. Whether they're acknowledged or not, there do happen to be many horror movies of the modern era that are incredibly scary and leave those who believe that modern horror movies aren't scary eating their words.

Horror comes in many shapes and sizes. Sometimes a film has an abundance of horrific gore, is psychologically bending or just downright disturbing in its visuals and ideas. Regardless of how, a horror film has many ways to be terrifying and all styles and forms of doing so are still utilized today. The last five years of horror have been quite good, and it needs to be acknowledged.

  1. When Evil Lurks (2023)
  2. Talk to Me (2023)
  3. Incantation (2022)
  4. Roh'/'Soul (2019)
  5. New Religion (2022)
  6. Smile (2022)
  7. The Sadness (2021)
  8. V/H/S/99 (2022)
  9. The Dark and the Wicked (2020)
  10. Good Boy (2022)

edit: since posting they've expanded the list, presumably when someone pointed out some serious omissions:

  1. Late Night With the Devil (2024)
  2. Longlegs (2024)
  3. Relic (2020)

It’s about to be a good stretch of time for theatrical horror releases, as two of the best horror movies of the year are arriving. That would be Speak No Evil and The Substance, where reviews have now come in almost simultaneously, and these are now two of the best-reviewed horror movies of the year.

Speak No Evil has an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes while The Substance has a 92%. In the context of well scored horror releases in 2024, that means the overall list is:

  1. Late Night with the Devil – 97%
  2. Oddity – 96%
  3. Infested – 96%
  4. Strange Darling – 95%
  5. In Flames – 95%
  6. New Life – 94%
  7. The Substance 92%
  8. Stopmotion – 91%
  9. The Devil’s Bath 90%
  10. Speak No Evil – 88%

So, both are in the top ten, though I would give the caveat that many of these are much smaller releases, and Speak No Evil boasts an A-lister like James McAvoy and The Substance has Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley. In other words if you’re looking for “big” horror movies (not to say they’re better than the rest on this list), these are that. Other wide release horror films like Longlegs, A Quiet Place Day One and Trap did not review this well.

Kevin Smith's best film since Chasing Amy is a heartfelt ode to teenage love, summer movies, and the 1980s.

I was really taken in by the trailer and have high hopes for this one.

In A Minecraft Movie, a group of humans are sucked into the Overworld, the dimension where Minecraft is real. A nonplussed Momoa is fresh back from getting his highlights and bangs done at the hairdresser, having accidentally picked up the wrong pink coat. Danielle Brooks from Orange Is the New Black is there with some “kids” (including 22-year-old Emma Myers from Wednesday). Here they meet Steve, one of the default characters from Minecraft, who comes in a light blue T-shirt and jeans and played by Jack Black, who after last year’s performance as Bowser in the Super Mario movie is surely regarded by Warner Bros as something of a success talisman. “This guy is such a toolbag,” moans Myers.

“Anything you can dream about, here you can make,” explains Black to our bewildered heroes, as cuboid pigs fly past and pink blocky sheep go “baa”. To get back home “they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things such as piglins and zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest.” Told you.

The reactions to the trailer have gone from “horrifying”, “devastating” and “expensively naff” to “painful for the parents who are going to be dragged along to see it” and “worst thing to happen in cinema in 2024”. But, like many video game spin-off movies, it isn’t aimed at adult film critics. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, who knows his cinematic onions, was so critical in his two-star review of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie (as was The Observer’s Wendy Ide in her one-star review) that Guardian games editor Keza MacDonald felt moved to defend it as a decent translation of the games, even if it’s not that good a movie.

...

So what does a real connoisseur think? “I think it looks pants,” says 10-year-old Arlo, whom I rudely interrupt playing some post-school Roblox on the iPad.

The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is coming exclusively to Max this Halloween season.

Announced today, Salem’s Lot premieres on Max on October 3, 2024.

Stay tuned for the official trailer, coming very soon…

Stephen King had recently tweeted praise for the film. He wrote earlier this year, “I’ve seen the new SALEM’S LOT and it’s quite good. Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything.”

The nominative deterministic owners of Hammer Films, the classic British horror movie studio and library, John Gore Media Limited, have announced the acquisition of Silver Salt Restoration, a British film restoration studio, as part of what they call "our ongoing commitment to preserving cinematic history." Silver Salt, which has a long history of working with the likes of Arrow, StudioCanal and the BFI, will now take on some of the more memorable films within the Hammer Films portfolio for restoration.

And right now Silver Salt is working on the remastering of a number of rare Hammer Films cult classics, many of which have been out of circulation for years. These films will undergo 4K restoration and preservation, for new and old audiences.

This comes as Hammer Films celebrates its 90th anniversary in November, with a special documentary, Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters on Sky TV, exploring the legacy of Hammer Films, its many productions, and its impact on British cinema.
