Set Notification icon to only show dot when there are notifications?

I am trying to get the notification icon on the task bar to only show the little dot when there actually are notifications. At the moment it shows the dot whether there are notifications or not:
As you can see the bell icon displays a dot even though there are no notifications. Can I somehow change that to only show a badge when there actually are notifications?
