Akademy is the annual event of the KDE community, and this year we are celebrating its 23rd edition. Akademy is a free, non-commercial event for developers, translators, designers, and other contributors meet in one place for talks program, meetings, and coding on the different projects that are part of KDE. Our attendees numbers keep growing year over year.

During 2020 and 2021, Akademy moved to an online model which saw an increase in online engagement during the conference. In 2022 and 2023, we adopted a hybrid model combining online and in-person participation to reach hundreds of attendees worldwide. This approach continued in 2024, setting the stage for an even larger event in 2026. The same model will apply during Akademy 2026, and we expect attendance to grow, making Akademy 2026 a year for collaboration and innovation. This year Akademy promises to be unforgettable!

Who is organizing Akademy? KDE e.V., the organization supporting the KDE community, is organising Akademy. KDE is a diverse, worldwide Free Software Community dedicated to creating an open and user- friendly computing experience. From file managers, email clients, and text editors to multimedia players and digital graphics tools, KDE applications help users control their digital lives regardless of their background and skills. Always ahead of the curve, KDE is expanding its presence on mobile devices with Plasma Mobile and Kirigami. The KDE Community has also developed a wide range of Android apps, such as Minuet, Marble, KDE Connect, KStars and many more. These apps provide users with a seamless operational experience on smartphones and tablets.

Hello!

Sorry I’m posting this here since I don’t think is specifically related to KDE but since I use KDE and is where I found it the first time I figured some of you might be able to help!

I found a bug that seems too affect many apps and I’m not sure where to report it. Let me explain the issue and hope some of you know where to report that!

So the other day I reported the bug on Krita that you can see on the video but later on saw that this seems to happen to many apps in Linux! So I entered a bit into a rabbit hole and tried many things. This same thing happens to GIMP, KolourPaint, etc. and it seems to be independent on the distro or the Desktop environment!

I’ve checked on Fedora, CachyOS and SteamOS (with Wayland and with X11) and also tried KDE and Gnome. All of them had this issue and then tried Krita on a macbook and didn’t seem to have the issue (correction: seems it's speed dependent. If you move the mouse too fast it doesn't do it else it does). And some of them where different computers too.

Does any of you know where this kind of things should be reported? This seems to be very fundamental and I have no idea where this should be reported. Any iedeas?

Edit: Since there seems to be some confusion here's the bug report:

SUMMARY Drawing a line with the brush creates a zig-zag pattern based on the zoom level

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  1. Select the Freehand Brush Tool (B)
  2. Set size to 1 px (happens in all sizes but 1 px is very clear)
  3. Zoom out with the wheel
  4. Draw a diagonal line
  5. Zoom in with the mouse wheel
  6. Draw a diagonal line

OBSERVED RESULT The line drawn when zooming out has a zig-zag pattern to it (like a stair) while the zoom in line has less or none (depending on the zoom level).

EXPECTED RESULT Both lines should be a smooth diagonals instead of a zig-zag pattern.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Operating System: Fedora Linux 43 KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0 Qt Version: 6.10.2 Kernel Version: 6.19.10-200.fc43.x86_64 (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland

Hardare used to draw: Logitech Gaming Mouse G502 I've also tested with the touchpad and my brother's computer with different hardware and mouse. This also happens there and even on the Steam Deck so it's definetely not a hardware issue.

Link to the bug report I first did: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=518636

Does anyone know where this should be reported?

The other day I learnt that @kde is brewing their own Linux distribution, and it's been living rent-free in my head since. And I think I've come to a conclusion.

I am 100% sure that those involved are 100% vested in the idea - but yet, it sits 100% wrong with me.

Why? What if GoodYear starts making their own cars? They would tight-fit their tyres to their own cars, not all cars in general. Same if Pirelli starts makeing their own cars.

I find it sad and very anti-democratic that they blocked my post, which is polite and respectful. The reply of the moderator was moreover rude: "Instead of starting useless drama here, seemingly in search of magic validation points" and "Go and protest somewhere else, to the people that can actually do something about it."

Here's my polite open letter:

I have been happily using KDE software, and especially the Kubuntu Linux distro, Plasma, and Dolphin, for almost a decade, on several devices. Of course I’m also a regular donor and affectionate follower.

It seems that more and more software developers in the Linux and FOSS ecosystem want to implement changes to comply with various age-verification laws. I understand that for the KDE developers and maintainers it might be a difficult decision whether to make this kind of changes or not. They have to consider “legal” aspects, collaboration with other developers, and, possibly, also what their user base think. What to weigh in, and how much weight to give to what, is of course up to the maintainers and developers.

I respect the choice that will be made by KDE. But I also want to make clear, in a respectful and polite way, that if such changes are implemented in KDE software and the Kubuntu distro, then I’ll move away from them, to other software and distros that do not comply (there already are some and I’m sure there’ll be plenty more).

“Well, who cares?” might the KDE people justly say. Partly I’m writing this open letter out of a feeling of friendship. It’s somehow like when you discover that a dear friend might have values very different from yours, so you have to break your no-longer-meaningful friendship, but you also feel you have to explain to your friend why, rather than going away silently. I also believe that many other KDE users think like I do, so this message does not come from me alone.

For me GNU Linux and FOSS is not only a choice about software: it’s also a choice about human values, human rights, and moral stances. These laws, besides being pointless, cross a threshold about human rights and values that I personally do not and will not allow (if this makes me a “criminal” in the egregious company of “criminals” like Claudette Colvin or King or Mandela, so be it). I want therefore to use software that also makes a similar choice, based not only on what’s “legal” but also on what’s “moral”. Besides appeals to politicians, marches of protests, strikes, and similar, also software choice is a form of protest and non-compliance; a stance.

KIO S3 1.0.1 (blogs.kde.org)

submitted 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) by jimp@beehaw.org to c/kde@lemmy.kde.social

The latest updates on KDE Neon appear to have brought in an updated KIO open/save dialog file picker that changes some behavior I was accustomed to. I don't mind re-learning things or adjusting my workflow, but it's more awkward now than it was before.

First, it no longer automatically filters the directory contents when you start typing a name. That was super convenient when trying to save a file in a directory that contains a lot of other directories. I found the quick filter toggle in the preferences in the upper right, but it isn't persistent. Each time the file picker comes up in Firefox, I have to click the preferences icon and re-check it, or press Ctrl+I, to show the filter bar.

Is there a way to change the default so that always shows the quick filter bar? Or re-enable the filter-on-type behavior? I already have it set to always show the filter bar in Dolphin but that doesn't seem to make a difference in the file picker.

I suspect that something can change those toggle defaults because on one of my installations it defaults to showing hidden files and on another one it doesn't. However, I haven't found any settings that seem to affect that behavior persistently yet. I don't mind editing a config file if there isn't a GUI option for it.

EDIT:

I looked through the KIO source and didn't see anything that might have been a config file option, and I tried several variations of the the name under [KFileDialog Settings] in my ~/.config/kdeglobals configuration but haven't hit one that makes it stick. For example I tried Show Quick Filter=true, Quick Filter Mode=true and various permutations of lines similar to those.

It is slightly faster to click a directory and start filtering with \ which also opens the filter bar, which I may have to live with for now.

Its really hard to use KDE applications(kolourpaint, okular) because i have to squint at the screen to make out the toolbar items. And this is for someone who doesn't have any accessibility needs(like people with color-blindness for example)

How is everyone else not constantly having Eye strain from this.

Hello everyone, this version is special not only because of the new features, but also because for the first time someone has contributed to the code. This may seem trivial, but it is important to me and to the project, as it means that people like it and it will continue to grow over time

Djmenig, I don't know if you will read this, but thank you for your time and for your interest in making Fluid Tile better

Features

  • Auto-switch layout based on tile count made by djmenig This new feature allows you to choose whether you want to add new desktops or switch to the next available layout with the default layouts, avoiding the creation of new desktops
  • Add "Trigger overflow per screen", only works when "Switch to next tile layout" is enabled

Improvements

  • The trigger that displayed the UI is now more accurate
  • The QML object Timer is created dynamically and works independently
  • Simplified the tile assignment process
  • Preventing signals from other windows from being disabled in certain processes
  • Maximize trigger simplified

That's all, remember that you can support the project by adding your ideas, reporting errors, or making pull requests, as well as inviting me to a “ko-fi”

Have a nice K-day!!!
