There is no word yet on whether this will be a direct sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, or a brand new standalone film that’s only technically a “sequel” like superhero franchises that reboot or retcon. Recent releases from Toho have been unique re-imaginings of the monster and series, but Yamazaki-san’s film ends in a way that certain sets up a sequel. And of course, audiences and fans of the franchise have been vocal about wanting a follow-up.

This weekend’s re-release is significant not merely for Godzilla Day and the anniversary itself, but also because it could help the film change box office history once again.

As I explained ahead of the re-release, Godzilla Minus One is a mere $828,600 to pass Life Is Beautiful as the second-highest grossing foreign language movie in U.S. history. The film is already TOHO’s biggest Godzilla film worldwide and the most successful Japanese live-action North American release of all time.

You have to hand it to Godzilla – he doesn’t look 70. The greatest movie monster of all time continues to age oh-so-gracefully. And given the Oscar success of the astonishing Godzilla Minus One, and the gleefully colourful carnage of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, you could even say the radioactive lizard is at the peak of his powers right now. Since the original Godzilla was released back in 1954, it’s now officially been seven decades since he first stomped his way to big-screen glory – and to celebrate, Japanese studio Toho has released an epic tribute montage to the big guy, spanning several decades and eras of kaiju storytelling. Give it a watch here:

When Godzilla Minus One hit theaters, no one could have seen just how big the movie would become. The project ushered in a new era for Toho as the Japanese company took Godzilla back to basics. With director Takashi Yamazaki at the helm, the movie has gone on to become one of the best in Godzilla’s history. Much of its success came on the back of its director, and now, it seems like Yamazaki is interested in revisiting the IP so long as he can remake a classic Godzilla film.

The confession comes from Yamazaki directly as the director appeared at New York Comic Con. It was there guests like Kaiju United got to learn more about movie monsters, and Yamazaki admitted he is interested in remaking Godzilla vs Hedorah.

“I think that for its time, Hedorah was a very cutting-edge kaiju. Thinking about the type of visual expression we can do with technology and how far it’s come today – I’m imagining how it would move, and I think that would be a really cool remake,” the director shared. And as you can imagine, the Godzilla fandom is now begging for Toho to greenlight such a movie for Yamazaki.
