"History does not repeat itself but it often rhymes."

If you're not aware of what's going on Aftermath have an excellent write-up:
https://aftermath.site/sweet-baby-detected-conspiracy-theory-steam

Currently another right-wing harassment campaign is raging and it keeps escalating, drawing wider circles every day. At the heart is a small consultancy company, called Sweet Baby Inc. They are accused of "destroying games with diversity and inclusivity". It is - of course - conspiratorial nonsense, the company isn't even doing what the chuds accuse them of. The fake outrage is yet again a pretext to spout hate and revel in sexism, racism, homo- and transphobia.

If all of this feels familiar to those who have been around the last time, that's because it is: 2024's Gators have fully the moniker of "GamerGate 2.0"

In the tenth year since GamerGate, we're seeing a repeat of it in the harassment campaign against narrative design studio Sweet Baby Inc. The same forces that set off the initial one have changed their language and targets, but the reactionary current is back, only strengthened in the intervening years, and still enabled by a corporate class that cares more about profit margins than worker well being.

This campaign - like in 2014 - is a part of the larger right-wing attack against anything that their fascist ideology disapproves of. Like the last time, they choose a small group to punish and harass in order to send a wider message. This needs to be stopped. But what we get instead is yet another failure of management class: Valve and Discord who own the platforms where (currently) the majority of the harassment is organized, have yet to take any measure. All we can do at the moment is to support each other and oppose the fascists.

So to SBI and its workers, solidarity, always.

Woman of the Year Accurso is officially one of the world’s most influential entertainers. She has now outraged Israel lobby groups by daring to empathise with — and weep over — the tens of thousands of Palestinian children maimed and murdered during the post-October 2023 phase of the genocide.

Accurso, who is Jewish, stated that “constant attacks” by ‘StopAntisemitism’ had led to the spike in threats hurled at her. This comes after the account accused her of “Hamas-aligned propaganda.” The propaganda referred to is her posts and videos about the suffering of Palestinian children. Also for raising funds to help them.

I decided to do some research on such online harassment campaigns. What I noticed that there are multiple online harassment campaigns that, similarly to Gamergate:

  • start on some levels of misinformation, usually by twisting the words or actions of the target,
  • the harassers control the narrative online by attacking anyone daring to oppose it in any way of form, by further harassment,
  • the harassers not satisfied until the main target (and often the newer targets) are ran off the internet, or some other demands are met.

I know that 4chan had a few rounds with harassment campaigns of the past, and I also have some suspicion that some 4chan users really wanted to chase the Project Chanology fame, but failing miserably. I did notice that some people have a weirdly specific brand of "mental health activism", that seems like it was made around the fact that the Church of Scientology was strongly anti-psychiatry, with some of those people even being leftists. I however do not remember too much of it, save for that they allegedly caused some teen girls commit suicide.

I’ve been a fan of shoujo manga for 20 years, and for much of that, I’ve been fighting to get other manga readers to take it more seriously. I even started a podcast, Shojo & Tell, where I talk to other fans and industry professionals about it. Even so, the word “shoujo” for me evokes knee-jerk stereotypes and assumptions that I have to consciously fight against.

Following our previous report on the Rockstar union members fired for gross misconduct, another employee at the studio got in touch with People Make Games to share screenshots showing what they believe to be some of the key evidence used by the company to justify its decision.

Rockstar has stated that these terminations happened because the workers had shared "confidential information on a public forum", but that's not how the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain describes it. Instead, it says this is actually about union busting, with Rockstar's management hoping to use whatever reasoning they can in order to destroy a union movement that was going from strength to strength.
