A group of climate scientists working in a remote base camp on the Australian outback discover an impossible landform. Led by botanist Hildur Johansson, the team sets out to conduct a routine exploratory mission to map the terrain, record their observations, and try to understand this anomalous landscape.

They arrive expecting the unexpected, and the Unbeing delivers. The expedition discovers a massive, entirely novel, giant holobiont that threatens to upend everything they understand about the natural world. Propelled by hubris and the intoxicating charm of forbidden knowledge, the research team descends into a hostile alien environment allowed to thrive without human interference. The beautiful yet unforgiving landscape hosts strange flora, gorgeous fauna and dangerous predators lurking in the darkness. As the team pushes deeper, can they survive long enough to find what they’re looking for?

Some people are scared of chainsaw-wielding maniacs in masks; others get chilled from dramatic revelations about unassuming but ultimately dark figures; then there are those who are scared of humanity’s place in the universe, that people are more insignificant than they are and are more susceptible to powers bigger than they can imagine, like internet algorithms.

This is cosmic horror which, as the name suggests, could suggest space, other dimensions, or other places entirely. All it needs to make people paranoid is to make them feel weak next to phenomena they can’t and would never understand. It’s inspired classic novels, movies, TV shows, and manga.

Summary

  • Cosmic horror explores humanity's insignificance in the face of unknown and powerful forces, like internet algorithms, creating feelings of paranoia and fear.
  • Manga like Soil, Gantz, and Parasyte delve into cosmic horror themes, blending genres like crime drama and action to explore humanity's helplessness against unknown threats.
  • Renowned horror mangaka, like Junji Ito, have crafted terrifying stories that embody cosmic horror, with themes of unpredictable futures, survival in desolate settings, and the manipulation of reality.

When comparing a film like Nick Szostakiwskyj’s Archons to its bigger-budgeted counterparts, it may be easy to focus on loose narrative threads as grounds for dismissal. But learn to look beyond the surface, and what we see is a film brimming with enough ideas to make even its shortcomings a compelling exercise in cosmic horror.

Archons is the second feature film from Canadian filmmaker Szostakiwskyj. When taken alongside his first feature, Black Mountain Side, an image of Szostakiwskyj as a storyteller begins to swim into focus.

"cosmic horror... is a subgenre of horror fiction and weird fiction that emphasizes the horror of the unknowable and incomprehensible more than gore or other elements of shock... themes of cosmic dread, forbidden and dangerous knowledge, madness, non-human influences on humanity, religion and superstition, fate and inevitability, and the risks associated with scientific discoveries... the sense that ordinary life is a thin shell over a reality that is so alien and abstract in comparison that merely contemplating it would damage the sanity of the ordinary person, insignificance and powerlessness at the cosmic scale..."
