UK regions (feddit.uk)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 month ago) by Emperor@feddit.uk to c/communityrequest@feddit.uk

As discussed in the post on requesting UK city communities on Feddit.uk in some cases it may be better to start a wider regional community (county, city region, etc) and then spin off ones for cities and towns as it grows.

And, yes, there'll be some debate over names. Either debate it below (where you should also flag up ommisions) or get cracking and we can tidy up later.

There was a reasonably active community on Reddit, but now that I'm not there anymore, I miss it.

Labour Party (feddit.uk)

We've got communities for the Lib-Dems, Tories, Greens and (iirc) SNP but we don't have anything for us dirty dirty socialist in the Labour Party.

Big user of the UK Parenting subreddit over on Reddit and I think it might be handy to have a similar community over here.

UK News? (feddit.uk)

Not quite a request but seeing what people thought.

Do we need a UK News community?

At the moment we have:

But nothing for the main news. At the moment unitedkingdom@feddit.uk is scooping up most of it.

We touched on this area previously.

I've got an itch to make one, but I suppose it wouldn't strictly all be UK-centric content, although that's not to say that UK doesn't produce plenty of great science.

I suppose my argument would be that it seems healthy for the fediverse to have similar, but distrubited communities and it's something that would hopefully be engaging for people here.

If it's not outside the scope of this instance then I might just go-ahead and see if the thing gets traction. Happy to mod it; my credentials are that I'm a scientist in my day job and I used a run a fairly popular e/n blog back in the day.

Thoughts?

UK Music Scene (feddit.uk)

OK, so this is a big ask but we should be able to create a list of excellent music communuties covering, genres, bands, artists, instruments and anything else we feel is great to add.

While this is the UK music scene, it can easily include references to music topics from around the world but focussed on the amazing UK followers.

You know the drill, if you know of a community, would like to see one exist or happy to spin one up then leave a comment and I will add it to the list.

General/Genric Communities

We have a few already but if your team isn't here then get it started.

If you are wondering whether to start one for a bitter rival, you might want to ask yourself why: if your motives are pure (to provide balance) then go ahead but probably think about finding moderators who are fans, if they are less so then find another community on here to start - there's not a shortage after all.

Key:

  • M = moderators needed

Currently we have:

English Premier League:

Yes, we do currently have three communities for Newcastle United, might want to have a moratorium on creating more, possibly even think about a merger.

Scottish Premier League

  • Aberdeen
  • Celtic
  • Dundee
  • Hearts
  • Hibernian
  • Kilmarnock
  • Livingston
  • Motherwell
  • Rangers
  • Ross County
  • St Johnstone
  • St Mirren

UK cities (feddit.uk)

We have a smattering when the enthusiastic have started them but it's patchy.

Naming conventions: use your best judgement but go with what makes it easiest for people to find - if there's more than one name go with the English for now and you can save the, for example, Welsh one for a Welsh-language community.

edit: as discussed in the comments, you may be better off with a more regional community first - those like London, Manchester and Liverpool already function like that as they cover the greater city area. So instead of Chelmsford and Southend, start one Essex; instead of Lancaster, start one for Lancashire. At least initially until things really get going here. That list is over here.

The list:

  • Aberdeen
  • Armagh
  • Bangor, Northern Ireland
  • Bangor, Wales
  • Bath
  • Belfast
  • Birmingham
  • Bradford
  • Brighton and Hove
  • Bristol
  • Cambridge
  • Canterbury
  • Cardiff
  • Carlisle
  • Chelmsford
  • Chester
  • Chichester
  • Colchester
  • Coventry
  • Derby
  • Derry
  • Doncaster
  • Dundee
  • Durham
  • Edinburgh
  • Ely
  • Exeter
  • Glasgow
  • Gloucester
  • Hereford
  • Inverness
  • Kingston upon Hull
  • Lancaster
  • Leeds
  • Leicester
  • Lichfield
  • Lincoln
  • Lisburn
  • Liverpool
  • London (technically City of London is one too but let's not split hairs at this point)
  • Manchester
  • Milton Keynes
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Newport
  • Newry
  • Norwich
  • Nottingham
  • Oxford
  • Perth
  • Peterborough
  • Plymouth
  • Portsmouth
  • Preston
  • Ripon
  • Salford

Request a Feddit.uk community

1 users here now

If you see a need for a community on Feddit.uk then the best advice is to start it. If you need help, then post a message requesting volunteers to pitch in on the moderating. Don't worry too much though there's plenty of people around who can advise the important thing is to get the ball rolling.

However, if you think Feddit.uk needs a community but you aren't in a position to help it get started then this is the community for you. Start a new post with the idea and then, when someone starts it they can throw a link in.
