Introduction

So, this is the end of the Journaling January event for 2026.

It's been a long thirty-one days, and I am not even certain how many people actually followed along with the event. I have been happy to see many of the prompt posts getting quite a few likes, so I have to believe there were people that were following along.

Personal Recap

Let me lead the way on this one, and if you were participating, please add comments about your own experience below.

A couple W's:

1. Personally, I was happy that I was able to keep to writing every single day. Even during the FediWriMo event last year, I had a day when I didn't write anything, so sticking to my guns and writing even when I didn't feel like it was a win for me.

2. Another win: writing more than the stated goal. Yes, it got out of hand a few times (eleven pages in one day?). But most of the time I was writing just what I wanted to get down on the page. If it took three pages, fine. If it took seven pages, okay.

3. Finding something meaningful in the prompts to write about. I didn't mention this as much as I could have, but while I didn't always sit down to write based on one of the prompts, I found them working their way into my entries. That was something I hadn't considered... Just letting them come up in the natural flow of my writing.

A couple of L's:

1. I didn't really improve my penmanship. I was hoping that writing this much would help. But the idea of writing cleanly and getting the thoughts down on the page really seem to be at odds with each other.

2. The prompt images. Yeah, okay, they weren't good at first. I had to redo them to make them more readable. Lesson learned.

3. And, I will say this, some of the entries in my journal this month have more "fluff" in them than I would have liked. It seems like there were times when I was trying to get an idea on the page, but I just couldn't get the ideas to coalesce properly.

Somewhere down the Line

There is this thing that many people have problems doing: having a vision for themselves. They don't want to think about five or ten years when they are struggling to make it through today. Interview Someone You Admire

Who are people you admire? Are they alive? The fact they are no longer alive would be one issue for me, another would be the likely language barrier. The person I am thinking of was German. As far as I am aware, they didn't speak English. At least not to a level that an English interview would be possible. (I've read a fair amount about them, and read interviews - and all of them were translated.)

It's So Special

It Doesn't Exist

There have been places that I used to go to that don't exist anymore. A coffee shop I used to go to everyday shutdown years ago. One of the schools I went to was torn down.

Same Sokio once again , different PieFed instance. I decided since Thriv is probably not going to work that I'd join Feddit Online (I think Unattributed originally joined with Feddit), considering that I might just go ahead and have something, just in case that server went down.

At least I have my Lemmy instance settings I was able to import onto here, and get out of communities that I just don't need to be in there. Pain Peko indeed.

Upsetting News

Back on day twelve we used random words from news or social media for writing, and on day twenty it was suggested to use a random article from Wikipedia. Today is the next leg of the current events based aspect of journaling: choosing a news story that makes you upset.

What Did They Lose?

Those Small Decisions

There are a ton of decisions that we make every day. But do we know what those decisions will lead to? Not likely, and yet our lives can be looked at as the sum of all the small decisions that we have made. I have the feeling that the title of this prompt would appear to be obvious since the words are in the prompt... But, in reality, it's a reference to the song Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof. That's just the way my mind works at times.

Lesson Learned

Life is full of lessons. I don't think you stop learning just because you left school, or you left the workplace. Personally, I think we should make it our lives objectives to learn something every day. This prompt is about one of those lessons.

Sometimes we are stubborn about things. Sometimes we can't just listen to what someone else has to say, we can't take a warning. We have to learn something through experience, and when that experience backfires, we learn something the hard way.

Sometimes there are jokes that just stick with you. I mean, there is a joke for comedians that never goes away, that kind of initiation joke told between comedians (if you know, you know... Penn and Teller did a movie about it). So, what's the one that sticks with you? Honestly, I would have to say the one that has lodged itself permanently in my mind is likely not the greatest joke I've ever heard. But it's still stuck in my brain...

So, I wanted to make a note of something. Yesterday I wrote 11 pages, and it honestly made the leader board look strange - like I had some weird lead. But, honestly, this competition isn't about how many pages we write, it's about how many days in a row we write.

So, I am adjusting my target goal based on how many days left there are in the event. IE, Day 14 through 31 is sixteen days. So, I took my page count and added 3x16=48 to my current 71 pages to come up with 119 pages:

I think this makes things look a bit more balanced.
