My coworker is massive Apple fanboy who gets the newest phone every year.

He goes through this exact process after a few days:

  1. Talks about how much faster the newest phone is

  2. Shows comparisons of photos or screen resolution

  3. Says it's expensive but the trade-in means he saves $x so really he only paid like 75% market price

  4. Talks about all the gadgets it connects to.

  5. Complains about how his prior phone did one thing he liked

  6. Complains about if it's worth the price

  7. Stops talking about it after multiple people point out feature x, y, z exists on other devices

  8. Gets excited about Apple World or whatever that conference is and prepares himself to buy the newest phone

Introducing the SlightlyBetter™ phone. Every year it gets slightly better!!

This year's features include:

  • Slightly improved camera

  • Slightly larger battery

  • Slightly faster processor

  • Slightly brighter screen

  • Slightly louder audio

  • Slightly quicker charging

  • Slightly no headphone jack

It's the same phone as last year, but now SlightlyBetter™

Yeah, because they always just compare the new one with the old iPhone, not with competitors. "The best in an iPhone ever!" Well, no shit, the new one isn't worse than the old one, gz!

And don't forget to invent crazy marketing names to hide tech specs ("Retina display" which wasn't even 1080p etc).

he only paid like 75% market price

Which is still twice the price of a normal phone lol.

[-] modcolocko 5 points 1 year ago

what is a "normal phone" to you, apple has over 50% marketshare in both the US and UK. iphones are, by definition, "normal phones".

the days of iphones being the expensive/overpriced option are over, with 1200+ android flagships being common

Pixel 7a:

iPhone 15 pro 128g sales for $1000, at 75%, is exactly twice the price of Pixel 7a 128g.

Nice to know your coworker "loves" the planet.

[-] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 35 points 1 year ago

It took about 10 seconds to realize I needed to filter out Vision Pro posts.

[-] Vlyn@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 year ago

Especially all the shitty viral marketing going on. Mostly on Reddit of course. Like /r/Damnthatsinteresting having two posts about someone walking around with one in public. It's so damn obvious.

[-] Fudoshin@feddit.uk 10 points 1 year ago

Did we say you could visit The Cursed Place?

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I just saw that same story twice on Lemmy this morning.

[-] Mojojojo1993@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

There like one fan boi spamming posts. Same with musk. I just block user

[-] naught@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Have you seen much marketing for it? I've had to seek it out. Vision pro is pretty neat to me, especially with how sharp it is and the ability to use with my macbook seamlessly, but sure as shit ain't worth 3,500. I think there are really well-executed ideas in there. That is what Apple does, not necessarily invent from scratch, but refine a concept and work it into their pretty walled garden.

It doesn't seem like Apple is aiming to make massive profit off this, seems very very gen 1 early adopter limited run. Seems odd to me there would be a full on marketing blitz other than fanboy and tech enthusiast reviews and hype.

e: i accidentally a word

[-] Vlyn@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 year ago

I mean 3-4 different videos on the same day of people wearing them in public. Probably paid off influencers. Just a way to bring the product out there (It's the first time I actually saw it, I don't care about Apple products) and to normalize seeing them around. As if a normal guy would use a crosswalk, standing in the middle of the road while interacting with his Apple Vision, lol.

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Probably paid off influencers.

Without having seen the videos, my thin-slice reaction is influencers using Apple as a kind of keyword stuff.

Super-exclusive product at extremely high price point with enough interest to get searches/upvotes/likes. Ripe for influencers to get views for themselves, the publicity for Apple being a happy secondary effect.

[-] naught@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Wow yeah that is ridiculous lol. I have only seen MKBHD and Norm from Tested talk about it, and I sought those out. Marketing aside I think once they refine the product and price point it could be pretty compelling! I hope nobody is crossing streets with it in the meantime....

I need the most expensive and largest iPhone model for clout, I won't utilize the extra functionality, I just need people to know I got money!

[-] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

I miss the days when people paid a drink for everyone in the bar so they know they were loaded, at least that day.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.de 8 points 1 year ago

So... an extra mortgage it is then?

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Just carry some money around then...

[-] errer@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

All tech really. Innovation is dead.

[-] RealFknNito@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

We have tech conventions like CES which prove you extremely wrong but alright.

[-] BeefPiano@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Adding ChatGPT to an ebike or adding “AI” to a pet door is basically what’s going on in the Patrick meme.

[-] RealFknNito@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I thought we were talking about how Iphones are nearly identical with a new price tag. Technology as a whole is progressing wonderfully, just not Apple.

[-] naught@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

anyone shitting on apple's innovation clearly has not used m1/2 etc. I'm not a fanboy but m1 is an absolute gamechanger for me as a dev. It is night and day. Truly mindblowing levels of performance compared to top spec intels from a few years ago

[-] RealFknNito@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

The $999 monitor stand sold seperately and the wireless mouse you have to flip upside down to charge have been my champions of their incompetency. I'm sure they've done good elsewhere but start to finish I think they're a company that preys on people's stupidity.

[-] naught@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

good point. there are plenty of duds to be fair, but vision pro seems like it could be the start of something really cool for VR

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Microsoft already built, launched, and abandoned that tech in the Hololens before Apple even released their first announcement. That's not innovation, that's copying.

[-] naught@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Because they failed miserably to market it tbh. Apple is a marketing company that also makes computers that I think are cool sometimes

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I agree with you. They also misjudged their target market considerably. They seemed to think it would have a lot of commercial and industrial applications and they wouldn't need the consumer market. I agree that there are tons of industrial and commercial areas that would benefit from AR, but those types of companies are usually pretty resistant to change, and even more resistant to spending money on experimental technology. It'll eventually happen, but they were very early to the market, kind of like Google was with the Glass.

[-] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I find Iphones pretty stupid. Thought you were joking with the mouse. Knowing their userbase, it was probably a success anyway.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

If your toaster doesn't even have a companion app, is it all really worth it?

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yes! I pay extra for products these days if they don't require ~~spying~~ apps.

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I'm still using the same pc I built over 10 years ago. I can't keep up with triple A max graphics titles but my computer still serves me well with very little in terms of upgrades.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

You should look into NVMe HDD. They're huge upgrades for older computers. You won't get full speeds, but with a PCIe adaptor, you can get half speeds, which will be a 350% improvement to your SATA hard drives.

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the tip. My orginal motherboard quit a few years back and my options were limited by my cpu socket. My biggest issue right now is memory capacity. I'm capped at 16 gb ddr3 right now, my old board went to 32 but its BIOS corrupted then also corrupted the BIOS backup or something.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I just upgraded last year for the first time in about 7 years, and I was honestly blown away by some of the advancements they've made in computer hardware. On a fresh install of Windows everything opened instantly, and post to boot times were like 10 seconds flat. But over a couple of months Windows gobbled up more and more resources. I switched to Pop!_OS full time and my machine is lightning fast. It's by far the most powerful computer I've ever used. If you were to buy top of the line stuff from last year, it would be cheap to build a new computer, and you'll definitely notice an improvement in performance. Granted, you said you're happy with what you have now, so no pressure. I'm just sharing my excitement with you as a fellow old-tech holdout.

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I honestly found windows 7 to run faster than 10 on my current set up. Im still on a 120gb ssd for my OS that cost like $200 when purchased so my boot times are fast enough. Im trying to unplug more and socialize/be more active so putting off the upgrade helps me with that in some ways. Glad you're happy with your upgrade results.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Im trying to unplug more and socialize/be more

Nice! Same here with the unplugging. It helps that I work on a computer all day. The last thing I want to do when I get off work is to get back on a computer. It's kinda sad, because they used to be one of my favorite hobbies, but whatever. I wouldn't voluntarily trade my career for more enjoyment on my personal computer.

I just moved to a smaller community and I'm hoping that'll present more opportunities for socializing, since I'll see the same people more than once. In the big city you'll never see the same people anywhere. In small communities you run into the same people all the time, and that can eventually turn into friendship.

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I have an oposite situation where my work has me working actively and I meet new customers everyday so I'm usually burnt by getting home.

Smaller communities are really good for meeting more people. Good luck on finding more friendships. I find it hard to meet people in real life during this digital age. I wish it were as easy and common have friendly conversations with a stranger as it is online here.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

So far it has been awesome! It's kind of like a step back in time. We've had 3 different neighbors come over and bring us a small housewarming gift while introducing themselves, and swapping contact information. None of them seem crazy or anything, just genuinely friendly people. All of the workers at local businesses seem happier and friendlier too. We were worried about moving away from the city, afraid we might end up in some backwards-ass trumpville, but everything has been great so far. It's probably the best decision we've made in years. The only noticable "drawback" so far is that business buildings are generally older and a little shoddier, not as nice and modern as they were in the city. We're okay with that given all the positive trade-offs. I never thought I'd move back to a smaller community, but here we are!

[-] Lemonparty@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I haven't had a desire or need to upgrade my phone in like 3 years now. Only reason I upgraded that one was because it wasn't 5G and I live an area where 5G actually works and is fast.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Even stuff like that is intentionally held back these days. They'll release like 1 "new" feature per year, which is already a couple of years old at the time of release, so that you need to upgrade again in six months if you want features that have been around for several years already.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Nah but see the new one has an apple logo on it. That's why it's worth $3600
