I think this almost articulates how I feel about the whole thing. Absolutely, the world will be a better place once everyone moves to Linux, but the Linux community sometimes has a hard time with not coming off like pedantic, high horsing assholes.

Not saying there's not great resources or welcoming communities out there, but the just use Linux crowd doesn't look like any fun.

Wasn't this used to be most famous republican rhetoric as well?

"Economy is getting worse but taxing rich is stupid and minimum wage is stupid and stopping monopolies is stupid so we should just not do anything instead."

Maybe it's a work computer and it's not their choice.

Than complain to IT, not to me.

Maybe they're not a computer toucher and do not have confidence touching computers.

When someone tells you to install Linux and reply that you don't know how, they're often willing to help.

Maybe they were perfectly happy using these OSs before some stupid new feature was introduced.

That is a perfect reason why they didn't have to use Linux, but do have to use it now.

Maybe they're tired or stressed or have no time.

In that case, they're probably not a gamer, which is the best reason not to switch to Linux. Also, when you buy a new computer, it is probably faster and less stressful to install Linux, than Windows 11 (assuming you want a usable win11, with most spyware disabled).

My fiance always tells me how much she hates me complaining about things and not doing anything to improve it, and i think that's a fair point. She has had to continuously tend for herself, fighting health care, education system and society to get by. And that really made me understand that complaining without doing anything is both priveleged and stupid. I have more respect towards others than trying to force Linux down their throats, but just complaining and ignoring a solution, even if all the circumstances line up perfectly, is just dumb. Complaining is justified, not doing anything or pretending you can't is not. That being said, the Linux community is obnoxious and, in many cases, has the worst case of superiority complex, although i do believe we have gotten way better at that and are way more welcoming now than before.

I wish I could use Linux on my work laptop.

I think the problem is worse. People tell me I should hate Microsoft and should be complaining. I'm no fan, but its just part of my life. Its got issues, but rarely does it interupt the busyness of my life. I'm ambivalent about Microsoft. They are not very different from the vast majority of global corporations.

I'm going to say this clearly, this comment is not an invitation to tell me how I should hate Microsoft.

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
