too bad reddit is dead

I think this touches on a bigger picture... It would only take Reddit handing over that data to change what it meant to have a piacy community on the internet. I'm not sure if people would be willing to trust again if that happened...

I'm glad we moved to Lemmy, and let's make it work 🏴‍☠️

I got my GDPR request and Reddit keeps all your IP logs from when you registered. Or maybe my account isn't old enough. Wonder how far it goes back for like years old accounts.

The IP you registered with permanently, and 3 months or 3000 entries in my case.

[-] Pulp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 year ago

I think registeration ip is always kept but at some point they delete the older ip addressess stored.

Are these GDPR requests something you can make outside of Europe? I'd love to try and help confirm it. Definitely not the oldest reddit account out there but I'm around 12 years there. Either way I think Lenny is the way to go. One issue I do with Lemmy though is the issue many subreddits have where they can become echo chambers. Especially with essentially one person having control over a swath of different communities.

I think you'll have to use a VPN to make it look like you're from Europe. Other than that, you should be good.

I gave it a try yesterday and it let me submit the request from Canada. No idea if they will come back in a month and say "Only Europe sorry"

In that case, good luck. And keep us updated.

Thanks :). Not sure I'll remember to do the update as their page says it can take up to 30 days to get the results. But I am definitely curious to see what kind of data they have logged on me over the decade (plus a bit) that I have had my account on reddit.

I'd be surprised if they did it. Where I work we get a lot of subject access requests and we will generally try and get out of it if we can as it's an annoying thing to have to do. Lots of people know this and put in requests just to piss us off (which I find amusing).

I have submitted a gdpr request myself (UK based so it applies) but not heard back yet. Think they have 28 days though so should get it soon.

If they do reject it I guess I just VPN to a Europe location and request it. Since reddit doesn't have you select a country for your profile I'm not sure how else they can deny the request except purely by IP address geolocation.

Misleading title.

Reddit only handed over the details of one user

Reddit pointed out that the anonymous speech rights of its users shouldn’t be violated, as long as the filmmakers have other ways to obtain the information.

Gonna change when they throw money at spaz.

r/Piracy will either not be around in a few years or it will barely be what it is now and the Reddit users will pat their corporate champions on the back.

[-] CmdrShepard@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

I was perma banned from reddit after getting banned from /r/movies for talking about piracy and then later accidently leaving a couple comments on posts there while scrolling through my feed. Some of these subs are definitely under corporate control.

Luckily here we can talk about our selfhosted alternatives.

They are trying to make money. To be profitable they can't pay too much.
