More than half of registered voters say the threat of political violence will be greater if Donald Trump is elected this November, according to a new poll.

While 58 percent of registered voters think the threat of political violence will be greater under Trump if he is elected, 21 percent say it will fall, a poll from CBS News released Sunday reveals. Another 21 percent say there will be no change.

Just over 40 percent of registered voters say the threat of political violence will be greater if current Vice President Kamala Harris is elected, while 27 percent say it will decrease and 30 percent expect it to stay the same, according to the poll.

Roughly 83 percent of Harris voters believe the threat of political violence will be greater under the former president, while 63 percent of Trump voters say it will rise under the vice president if she wins.

The poll comes as GOP leaders blame Democratic rhetoric for the two assassination attempts against Trump this summer.

"threat of political violence" has already increased, and will keep increasing as long as trump is even a thing, because that's how maga voters are. if he's allowed to steal the election like he tried in 2020, then there's nothing to even talk about, because that's the end of everything

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago

These are people who believe that violence is justified by its efficacy and vice versa, barely held in place by the current rule of law.

Would you like to buy a pager ?

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago

I'm still shocked they changed their slogan from "Make America Great Again" to "Take America Back". The people who came up with that saw that it implied violence and fully embraced it.

There will be political violence no matter what the election outcome. If he wins it will be post inauguration. If he loses it will be to try and take power.

There has already been too much political violence this election cycle with two assassination attempts.

Until Trump and his MAGA party are put in their place, either by rule of law or the impact of that violence, we will have violence.

Trump is just the fucking symptom. He's terrible but nothing compared to the foaming at the mouse acolytes he has.

We need to make it impossible for this to ever happen again. I just don't see this happening without another civil war.

Trump is also the Lightning rod: Lightning strikes might be less frequent or less focused if he weren’t there

Personally I believe it will be a typical curve:

  • greater violence after the election as the crazies don’t accept the results
  • opportunity to make an example of the crazies. Let use up that jail space formerly dedicated to profiting off minor drug users
  • a general calming as their crazy conspiracies don’t pan out,
  • as Trump realizes he’s too old for another go in four years and retires to Mar El Lago: he’ll still instigate, still dish the crazies but people will realize he’s no longer the lightning rod, the craziness will lose focus
  • Truth Social shits down as the remaining crazies are not a viable business plan
  • try as they might, other Republicans are no Trump. Trying to copy his brand of populous outrage won’t work for them

This is solid summary, Trump has a cult of personality which are rarely transferable once he goes the entire thing will implode. Plus given how Trump motivates otherwise apolitical folks who didnt care beforehand theres a solid chance some of them would just go back to not caring.

I know it's an autocorrect error, but "foaming at the mouse acolytes"actually works here. "The Mouse" aka Disney. Hah!

There has already been too much political violence this election cycle with two assassination attempts.

I just saw this article and I think it's wild.

… but a majority somehow think he will be better for the economy, so many of them will opt for him. Why he’ll be better for the economy I have no idea, but of course the economy must trump all other things.

Eww, my phone autocorrected “trump” to “Trump.” Twice.

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

There’s a plan. The best plan. It will be huge, everyone says it. Well, the concept of a plan really. Actually I'm just saying what you want to hear so I can indulge my ego, attract more fawning, and claim the power to act in my every impulse

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Ah ha! You told the truth! Fake news!

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Better for the economy in that corporate taxation will cease to exist, complete and utter removal of any workers rights, removal of all corporate red tape and anti monopoly laws and regulations, and constant corporate bailouts using taxpayer money (with only lower and middle classes being the groups that actually pay those taxes).

So if course it'll be a boost for the economy

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

Yeah cuz he keeps saying that. They're not hiding it.

[-] Cheems@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

Didn't trump promise that himself?

[-] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Yes but this story is about people who can vote.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

58% of registered voters don't live under a rock.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

I mean we saw trump incite political violence last time he was elected. If trump wins this time, he promised mass deportations. If trump loses this time, he tries another coup. I say we go with trump loses, but that's me.

[-] Vespair@lemm.ee 6 points 1 month ago

Yep. The difference is one side is rubbing their hands excitedly while saying it.

[-] barsquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

There is 100% chance of political violence regardless because we have a cult of far-right radicals worshipping a con man demagogue. Two assassins this year already went after Donald.

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

There's also the big thread of violence if he's not elected

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

There will always be political violence. The only purpose of the state is violence. They're literally promoting a genocide right now. The candidates only debate about who will be more merciless.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

There's political violence right now.

It's just overseas.

[-] Spitzspot@lemmings.world 2 points 1 month ago

And what happens if he loses? /s

[-] ironhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

If he loses at least he won't be the dictator of the us. And it's much harder to have your political rivals (people who disagree with your decisions) jailed and or killed if you aren't a dictator or in official power.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

An increase in political violence.

[-] Soup@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 month ago

If we’re to take the morons that are voting for Trump seriously- there will be a shit ton of violence if Harris is elected, because they will be the ones causing it.

[-] Nougat@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago

Oh there’s going to be “political” violence no matter what. The fascists will either scream about “stolen election” or be given permission to exact their misplaced “revenge.”

Springfield OH is the current testing ground of “how far can we push it,” and the fascist campaign is actively and overtly doing the pushing.

[-] nemonic187@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

They’ve been literally saying this for months.

[-] archomrade@midwest.social 1 points 1 month ago

The threat of political violence will increase if he loses, too.
