J.D. Vance has joined the chorus of conservatives who have begun claiming that President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race constitutes a so-called “coup” in the Democratic Party.

In an interview filmed on Saturday with Fox News’s Jesse Watters, a clip of which aired on Fox & Friends Monday morning, Watters asked former President Donald Trump and his newly minted running mate, Vance, the new question plaguing Republicans: “Is it a coup against Joe Biden?” Both of them fumbled their answers.

“Uh, sort of,” Trump said unsure, looking over to Vance for explanation.

It’s so disheartening that people this dumb have made it this far.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 64 points 3 months ago

The dumb people like them. And there's lots of dumb people. And they're being kept dumb on purpose.

[-] BakerBagel@midwest.social 14 points 3 months ago

He wrote a book about why it's ok to hate rural poor people. White suburbanites eat that shit up every time.

[-] juice702@lemmy.world 12 points 3 months ago

You saw how big “Hawk Tuah” girl got. Dumb people elevate dumb shit. Thankfully she seems to be pretty level headed. But at that moment I knew us Americans like really, really dumb shit and will put those kinds on a pedestal.

[-] stoly@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Yeah but didn't she get fired over that video?

[-] atx_aquarian@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Sounds like no, she wasn't.

Haliey Welch used to wake up at 3:30 a.m. every morning to go to work at a spring factory in Belfast, Tennessee.

...

Now, Welch is sleeping in.

...

She may be small town, but she's savvy. Welch is taking what started as embarrassment and is turning it into a career. She's assembled a team consisting of an attorney, a management company and a PR firm. That team is entertaining appearances with price tags north of $25,000 each, according to her manager, Jonnie Forster, owner of Los Angeles-based management firm The Penthouse.

"Right now, she can make more money holding up a can for five minutes than she made all last year," Forster said.

...

Once she saw the merchandise being made and sold online by other people, she thought, "If everyone else is making money off of it, I might as well, too."

She quit her job at the spring factory on June 27.

[-] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 13 points 3 months ago

...fuck yeah. Milk that 15 minutes for all it's worth.

[-] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

A local buisness that she was friendly with started making custom hats in the first few days for her. She signed some of them they sold like 50k worth almost immediately.

It's a funny little video, honestly. Im glad shes getting paid.

She made a blowjob joke. That’s it.

Projection

This brought to you by the asshole who gave us Jan 6th.

[-] thrawn@lemmy.world 45 points 3 months ago

Everyone knows a coup is when a candidate steps down and endorses their VP. Biden is still POTUS, with the immense powers of a President, but he has of course been overthrown.

[-] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago

I mean, according to SCOTUS ~~last month,~~* he could send the Marines into the EEOB to put down any "coup" without any legal ramifications, so I feel like he's not really being mistreated.

*THIS MONTH. It was THIS MONTH. The writers for this season really need to slow down.

[-] ech@lemm.ee 9 points 3 months ago

We're 4+ years into the 2020s and it's been absolutely insane all the way through. I dread the second half of this decade.

[-] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

I remember thinking in 2015, "This has been a bit of an odd year, can't wait for Trump nonsense to die down so we can get back to normal."

That feels like it was simultaneously last week and also ancient history.

[-] OldWoodFrame@lemm.ee 43 points 3 months ago

Biden running against Trump and winning legitimately in 2020 they called a coup too, and they said Jan 6th wasn't one. At some point they just show they don't understand the meaning of the word.

[-] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 20 points 3 months ago

No the point is to use the word so often that it loses its meaning and then anyone who uses it will be instantly written off.

[-] 242@lemmy.cafe 32 points 3 months ago

Deal with it, bitches. The fact that every right winger is repeating the coup talking point tells you everything you need to know. They are in absolute panic mode.

[-] ccunning@lemmy.world 26 points 3 months ago

“Uh, sort of,” Trump said unsure, looking over to Vance suddenly fearing for his life…

[-] GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world 26 points 3 months ago

We are going to see lots of this type of bullshit.

It's the GOP and related "news" outlets that are throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks.

[-] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world 22 points 3 months ago

I wonder if tRump chose Vance because it kinda sounds like Pence. Easier to remember.

Or maybe he doesn't want a VP candidate with a name that has more letters than he has.

[-] Omega_Man@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Didn't he refer to him as JD Wentworth?

Edit: fake news. Sad that it was believable.

it’s my money and I want it now!

[-] Zorsith 7 points 3 months ago

J.D Wentworth

877-CASH-COW

[-] boydster@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I don't remember that one, but he did call him "J.P.", then tried course correcting only to careen off road in the other direction with "J.D. Mandel" at a rally once

[-] BrokenGlepnir@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

I think that was labeled as satire by snopes.

[-] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 3 months ago

Maybe he'll call him pants at some point.

[-] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

I wonder if tRump chose Vance because it kinda sounds like Pence. Easier to remember.

I was joking just a few days ago that all those folks still flying "Trump - Pence" signs from 2020 or the really faded ones from 2016 just need to change the "PE" to "VA" and they're good for another 4 years of sun bleaching.

[-] 242@lemmy.cafe 3 points 3 months ago

I think he chose both of them because their names have 5 letters and the simple symmetry of them matching his name in length is soothing for a moron like Trump.

They know it's not a coup, they are diluting the meaning of the word. Since they likely plan to use another coup attempt if they lose.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

Well, at least THIS time we can call in some fucking muscle to put that shit right down. I hope to god they lose and try something dumb and this time we are ready for them - even arrest/disrupt them prior, ideally. Get more of them in the prison industrial complex and keep them out of politics.

I also hope they lose so that the J6 insurrectionists don't get pardoned by that asshat donnie.

They're talking about invoking the 25th amendment... Like they want Kamala to be president sooner?

Never mind the faulty logic of "if you don't want to run for president again, you can't run the country now"

[-] SparrowRanjitScaur@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

They don't have anything they can use against her right now. They want to get her in office for a few months so they can attack every single choice she makes.

[-] quicklime@lemm.ee 3 points 3 months ago

They think her odds against Trump are possibly even worse than Biden's were. But they're mistaken

[-] BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

If Biden died, and the Dems still ran him, I'd vote for his corpse because he's not Trump. If Harris ends up the nominee, I'll vote for her for the same reason. But I'm not excited about it.

Biden's decision to step down isn't in any way an acknowledgement that he is unfit to serve it is more so a decision right or wrong that he would lose whether it be for his poor performance at the debate, gaffes, or age. With the Democrats pushing in the same direction this could have become a self fulfilling prophesy.

There is no reason to believe he can't both stay in office AND step down in favor of Harris. It has always been acknowledged that parties have a broad latitude to select their candidate and ultimately the people will decide.

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago

GOP: “Biden isn’t fit to serve, he should get out”

Biden: Gets out, and tags the presidential backup everyone elected in the last general

GOP: “CoUp!”

Hey Republicans, just so we’re clear: you can lose your mind about something the Democratic Party is doing, but we’re not obliged to give a single shit about your reaction.

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 months ago

We're free to make merry over it.

[-] rustydomino@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

If you want me to be perfectly honest I’m not thrilled that essentially my vote for Biden in the primaries isn’t going to count - that does rub me the wrong way. But fuck it, idgaf let’s go Kamala! Rebpublicans can take their fake outrage at gtfo.

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

For their sanity, Donald should drop out of the race.

[-] zcd@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 months ago

I thought coups were ok?

[-] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 months ago

Someone tell them the DNC is a month away.

[-] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

Yeah, but with Biden's and Pelosi's endorsement, and with her already being on the ticket before this, and with no other major candidates being on the field (and practically nobody at all with the name recognition, unless Michelle Obama wants to toss her hat in the ring), there's really nobody else that's likely to be considered. They want the convention to go smoothly and be a show of unity, so they're going to have all their ducks in a row long in advance. It'll be Harris, unless something super awful happens this month.

[-] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

"It's a coup! Because I don't want to face her in any debates!"

[-] snekerpimp@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Breaking centuries of gentlemen’s agreements will land you in this place gentlemen. Cry those sweet, sweet tears, we will be there to lap them up.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Why they so mad, bro?

[-] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

To misquote an Eddie Izzard bit:

Sweet Shop short changed me. A fucking coup on them!
