Unions make your job better even if you're not in one by fighting for your rights as much as theirs. They want your pay to be as good as their pay.

I heard unions are not a thing in China and Russia. I recommend you migrate to either for two years, then come back and tell us if you want unions or not.
Then that just makes you either a poor negotiator/salesman/talent or the market you are trying to get into is saturated.
