I have a boss who tells us weekly that everything we do should start with AI. Researching? Ask ChatGPT first. Writing an email or a document? Get ChatGPT to do it.

They send me documents they "put together" that are clearly ChatGPT generated, with no shame. They tell us that if we aren't doing these things, our careers will be dead. And their boss is bought in to AI just as much, and so on.

I feel like I am living in a nightmare.

AI can't do much with my job as of yet (power plant engineer). I use it sometimes to take pictures of things like specialty valves. The pics are quickly identified and can make sourcing replacements/repair/rebuild shops a bit faster. I use it to help newer guys study for their upcoming license tests too.

Identifying types of valves sounds like a genuinely useful use of AI. Very cool.

I typically know what type of valve it is. The issue is if its from 30+ years ago, finding a suitable replacement. Ive asked it metric or imperial for fasteners based on thread and its been good at that too. I'm a rare breed though in the sense I use it. The majority of this trade is filled with 50+ year olds who have never heard of using AI for anything outside of dystopian science fiction.
