It's not even the same level of propaganda. This time even US intelligence agencies are saying there are no WMD and that Iran was still years away from being able to have one. On the other hand Netanyahu has spent literal decades saying Iran is going to have nukes by next week.

[-] Willy@sh.itjust.works 49 points 3 days ago

There wasn’t much of a consensus for Iraqi wmds either.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 32 points 3 days ago

And it was never supposed to be nukes right? It was like chemical weapons or something.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 days ago

Bush Jr did at one point say something like "... the smoking gun, which could come in the form of a mushroom cloud."

Think it was a SOTU. 02?

[-] AppleTea@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago

that was a back-peddle made by the Murdoch machine nearly a decade later, where they tried to claim some old expired chemical weapons (that the United States gave to Saddam in like the 'eighties) were in fact the fabled WMDs.

[-] boonhet@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The CIA knew it was bullshit but Cheney wanted there to be WMDs so chose to believe bullshit artists instead, if John Kiriakou is to be believed. One of the only times in history where CIA might have been the good guys.

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 17 points 3 days ago

I'm just saying that even organizations that were lying about Iraqi WMD are not doing it now.

[-] cook_pass_babtridge@feddit.uk 10 points 3 days ago

Also, Bush and Blair at least tried to go through the UN, before they just ignored it and did it anyway. This time it's just "oh I guess we're at war now".

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

I mean, do you want to wait until they actually do have them? I'm not familiar with what Netanyahu has said, but years away seems like a good time to disrupt their program.

[-] forrgott@lemmy.sdf.org 37 points 3 days ago

Do you always advocate preemptive punishment for crimes that have not actually been committed ("yet")?

And frankly, I didn't trust any of the nuclear powers, especially not the US. Fuck sake we have an orange dementia patient in charge!

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

Conspiring to commit a crime is a crime in and of itself.

And I get not trusting the USA, but Iran is a lot more terrifying.

[-] forrgott@lemmy.sdf.org 32 points 3 days ago

Way to deflect there, buddy.

US never had any business "policing" other countries, especially considering how many governments we've been responsible for overthrowing - for nothing more than profit.

And I couldn't possibly care any less about fear mongering propaganda about how terrifying Iran is. Don't get me wrong, that fucker in charge is a complete bastard. But I don't actually know anything other than the message I'm told to believe - by one of the most corrupt nations on the planet.

Fuck warmongering. ಠ_ಠ

[-] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.cafe 23 points 3 days ago

If having nuclear weapons is a crime then start with Israel.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 3 days ago

I mean hey, your username is on point for your opinion here but uh, no.

No, Netanyahu in particular has been stating Iran will have a nuke in months since about 1995.

Go check the Daily Show's (or maybe its Jon Stewart's?) YT channel for a quick montage recap of Bibi literally claiming this ssme thing for 30 fucking years.

It is 30 years later, and even the official consensus of the US's own intelligence communities is that Iran does not have a nuke, cannot achieve enrichment beyond about 60%.

And that only even happened because Trump trashed Obama's deal with Iran to keep enrichment to only low grade, nuclear power plant levels... which was working, and they were adhering to, and letting the IAEA in to verify.

Meanwhile they are being bombarded by a hostile nation state that has had nuclear weapons since roughly 1970, that constantly does everything it can to lie about that, to prevent IAEA inspectors from being assigned to them.

That nation state is Israel, if that wasn't clear.

So... Iran was previously cooperative and diplomatic.

Then Trump was a backstabbing, bellicose buffoon, and Iran... didn't even revert to MAD, they reverted to roughly 2 steps below MAD, as you'd have to run the 60% enriched uranium through an entire other industrial process to get it to weapons grade, which no one believes they can currently do, and then make that into actual bombs, which is a whole other thing entirely.

The Iranians have already shown themselves to be quite capable of rational negotiations about nukes, and adhere to agreements.

It is Israel and the US who have been irrational, agressive and underhanded, who have gone back on their word, and forced Iran into an impossible situation from their POV.

We could just maybe not act like insane warmongers, and Iran would likely go back to the negotiating table... us assuring them we will stop assasinating their negotiators might be a good first step.

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

You seem knowledgeable. Is tritium still necessary for nukes, and, if so, does Iran have access to that?

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 days ago

So first, I am not a nuclear physicist, just a bored autist with nothing better to do while doing PT full time to recover from a series of injuries.

That being said:

Tritium and Deuterium are normally what you'd need for a fission-fusion bomb, or... trying to develop a fusion reactor like a tokamak or what not.

Tritium and Deuterium are mechanically, industrially, produced in yet again another different kind of process that is not the same as the different stages of uranium enrichment.

As of right now, the only sources I can find claiming Iran is developing a tritium production capacity... all trace back to here:

https://www.ncr-iran.org/en/news/nuclear/ncri-reveals-secret-rainbow-tritium-facility-for-nuclear-missile-warheads/

But this is.directly conflicted with Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's Director of National Intelligence (basically her job is to oversee all of the US's various intelligence agencies, hybridize what they are saying into a cohesive big picture)

https://www.factcheck.org/2025/06/trump-gabbard-comments-on-iran-nuclear-capability/

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/americas-spies-say-iran-wasnt-building-a-nuclear-weapon-trump-dismisses-that-assessment

She mentions nothing about tritium.

... Tritium alone will not make a nuclear fusion /hydrogen bomb.

You have to start the fusion reaction with a fission reaction, made out of >90% enriched urananium.

While it is true that Iran has a lot of 60% enriched uranium... even if they did have tritium... they would still have to further enrich the uranium, and actually build and test an actual nuclear bomb/warhead.

Making a bomb actually work properly is an entirely other, pretty darn difficult thing to pull off, which is why the precise details of that is basically the most classified info on Earth.

Currently, as best I can tell, US intelligence agencies as represented by Gabbard have essentially dismissed this NCRI report as flawed or invalid in some way... which is why Trump just said that he doesn't care, because he has seen this story that originates from NCRI bouncing all over the right wing American media sphere.

Trump, rather infamously, doesn't (or potentially can't) read briefings or documents that are more than about a page long.

His first admin. was marked by many staffers figuring out stupid ways to overly summarize things, or make any documents he'd need to read be openly praising him, for him to actually read anything... and in this second admin it seems even worse, all he does is watch TV news, and he will claim it is more true than literally the reports from the most expensive intelligence network on the planet....

... so. yeah. we have insane conspiracy theory rapist racist felonious dementia grandpa for President, and he just believes whatever he wants to, and then his maggat cult followers do the same.

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago

Thanks, great analysis. Fuck that piece of shit and fuck the people who own him with a whale's dork.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

One last note:

You can make a just fission only bomb with just highly enriched (>90%) uranium... again assuming you can actually make the bomb in the correct manner.

The US's early nukes, the ones we dropped on Japan, were fission only.

Still awfully destructive, but ... the opposite of miniaturized.

With fission-fusion (and other more complex setups)... you can get much more destructive power in a lot smaller and less heavy package.

Making a fission only warhead on a missile or in a bomb... you would need something quite large.

Like, hide it in a semi truck or large van and then detonate it.

Or a fuck off huge ICBM.

Basically, its... not very realistic to imagine a fission only nuke as something that could be practially be used by conventional military delivery methods that I am aware that Iran has access to.

Its possible you could make like a suicide bomber truck, an Oklahoma City Bombing / WTC 93 bombing with a nuke.... but this truck, with a goddamned nuke in it, would have to somehow drive to its target.

Not impossible, Ukraine and Israel just managed to sneak basically semi trucks full of drones and shit into enemy territory... but not easy either.

Iran has certainly snuck equipment into Syria, Lebanon, Iraq... but not Israel/Palestine, at least as I am aware, nothing that huge, that heavy.

Iran can and does send funds and basically build a gun, build a mortar, build a bomb kits to Hamas and Hezbollah... as well as train people in being good guerilla fighters... but I've never heard of them delivering something you couldn't smuggle in a car trunk.

I may be not sufficiently informed on... the entirety of everything Iran has managed to smuggle into Israel/Palestine though.

[-] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.cafe 22 points 3 days ago

Israel is committing a genocide, no one seems to be disrupting them.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 14 points 3 days ago

to disrupt their program.

Why? There is no evidence at all that they're trying to build a nuclear bomb, yet you're taking the side of these guys.

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Serious question, why do you think they're enriching uranium? Do you genuinely believe they want to build a nuclear power plant?

[-] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.cafe 18 points 3 days ago

Yes. They have a right to civilian nuclear power.

[-] arrow74@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago

Hell they have just as much of a right to nukes as the US does. We shouldn't police the world.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 10 points 3 days ago

Uh... yes why not? They wouldn't have signed the JCPOA otherwise.

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

You poor thing.

[-] belastend@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

It's true that the enrichment levels Iran has reached exceed the level needed for civilian usage, but it's also true that they already have a nuclear power plant.

[-] flandish@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

actually have them.

100% unironically: yes. I’ll tell you why. The US already has them and has used them on civilians twice already.

[-] arrow74@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I don't think my nation has the right to control what other nations do through military force.

We do it, but I don't think we should

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 77 points 3 days ago

America is a threat to world peace

[-] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Has been for the last 80 years.

[-] shawn1122@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago

When a large part of your origin story is being the number one weapons dealer in WW2 with geography conveniently placing you out of range for major infrastructure loss... We really can't be suprised.

[-] LadyButterfly@lazysoci.al 7 points 3 days ago

Sad but true

[-] jonesey71@lemmus.org 13 points 2 days ago

The trick is they all want war, so the PRETEND to fall for it. It is like Susan Collins in Maine who keeps pretending to believe Trump learned his lesson but she knows what he is. No one can be as stupid as she pretends to be and still operate a fork and spoon.

[-] themaninblack@lemmy.world 52 points 3 days ago

It wasn’t cool the first fucking time. It was totally obvious.

[-] sfxrlz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 58 points 3 days ago

They want people uneducated for a reason.

[-] Flamekebab@piefed.social 42 points 3 days ago

It wasn't okay the first time around either. Anyone credulous enough to believe that obvious bullshit shouldn't have been allowed to form legal contracts for their own safety.

[-] F1gm3nt3d@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

It's a lot of the same people who voted Trump in, so that shit tracks.

[-] Flamekebab@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago

I was a young teen when it happened and it just seemed ridiculous that anyone would be naïve enough to fall for the extremely obvious lies.

[-] F1gm3nt3d@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

I'm probably? a couple decades older than you, it's always been this way. My entire life has been Americans convincing other Americans to fuck their own country and futures for culture war bullshit, petty vengeances, and unmitigated greed on the promise that they'll get theirs too only to be left empty handed and worse off than before. Then they vote the same way again while complaining that all the problems are the same. The joke about the definition of insanity applies.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

military propaganda is hella va drug: top gun maverick, various videos business insider had been posting it on yt on many of the jobs, and plus a bunch of shows.

If Iran really have WMDs the Zionists aren't going to pull the shit they're currently pulling right now.

Only Bernie sanders resisted before.

Who will resist this time
