Relevant xkcd which sums up the situation nicely: xkcd: Cutting Edge

I'd say, it's about gamers who enjoy playing older titles or (re-)discover something they haven't played in a while. It's not about jumping on every hype-train to play the latest games that just came out but to appreciate them after a while and share that experience with others - often to the effect that rushed relases have been ironed out by then.

I've read many elaborated posts about how people liked the games they just played, some were real in-depth reviews while others just shared the joy of playing these games with like minded folks. It sure was one of my favourite subreddits where I've found a couple of excellent recommendations for what to play. Happy to find it here now!

I would also add waiting for GOTY editions with all the DLC for cheap. There are a few times where Ive liked a game but if you wait you can pick it up for 20 dollars and all the dlc

Absolutely! I also have to admit, I've collected so many free games over the years (on epic and steam and other platforms) that made it easy to try even when it's a genre I hadn't touched yet or a game I was reluctant to buy. They often came with DLCs and weren't brand new - also a case for the patient gamer :)

One of the reasons it was a favourite subreddit of mine was that the members all seem to be a bit more mature, quite often older gamers, and so the discussion was just more balanced, rational, and, well, more mature basically.

The sidebar to this community sums it up pretty well. “ A gaming sub free from the hype and oversaturation of current releases, catering to gamers who wait at least 12 months after release to play a game. Whether it’s price, waiting for bugs/issues to be patched, DLC to be released, don’t meet the system requirements, or just haven’t had the time to keep up with the latest releases.”

Talk about games that are long past the initial hype wave.

Games no longer being hyped.

As the name suggests - patient gamers.

Mostly it's for discussing games that came out a while ago that you're just now getting around to. You get the benefit of the bugs largely having been fixed and being able to get the game for a much lower price than what it released at.

It's also quite liberating getting to explore some real gems without having your perception distorted by the hype-train.

Welcome.
