If I am required to do this, I am purging my Discord account immediately. I am not giving them face scans.

I already hate how so many things use discord when it could be on a simple web page instead. I won't miss it, I'm not going to submit to that either.

I have yet to use discord and I haven’t felt like I’ve been missing anything as a result.

A lot of games/gaming communities have moved from forum/wiki info repositories to "it's on the official discord" type stuff.

Oh, look, one more service that I won’t need to use anymore.

I wonder if a generated image from ThisPersonDoesNotExist to fool it. Generate an image, print it out and keep it in your wallet, and then hold it up to the camera each time it requires verification. A very contrived half. But there's would be subs satisfaction in fooling it, assuming it worked.

The video mentions that you might be asked to turn your face, smile, etc. So this is probably not gonna work.

I clicked that link and it definitely showed me my environmental science lab partner. So, idk what to believe.

According to a comment on YouTube:

I have taken a look at the developer documentation. It appears it works by downloading an AI model to a web browser window (on mobile, the model would be bundled within the app instead). The facial analysis is performed within the window/app, running on your own hardware, and then the estimation result is sent back to the web server. This means they don't necessarily need the footage uploaded to their servers, but it doesn't rule out the possibility that they might do it anyway.

Just some extra context.

spoilerIdk how to post as non-mod, please don't be mad

If it runs locally, how do they know to trust the result?

[-] donuts@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I'm not sure, but the percentage of kids younger than 13 that would know how to manipulate that would be very little, I presume. Small enough to be considered an error margin I guess?

Just wait; in 2 weeks the extension to break this will be in both chrome and Firefox store.

I assume this is for countries that are passing age verification laws? I haven't seen a credible source yet.

I'd be surprised if this is anything more than a lie to gain attention. I'll have to watch when I get home.

Is this required for signing up or only if you're banned for being underage?

[-] donuts@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Just underage, and even then you can opt for the manual method via support instead

We the petite (and allies), will not submit to identity rape from whichever self-important board of A-holes that came up with this.
