One thing that bothers me personally is that nowadays everything is a membership, but what bothers me most about the subscription model is the fact that the price goes up and up indefinitely and many people really don't mind paying $2 or more a month.

I mean, let's take for example the case of Netflix (I know the image is old, but I couldn't find anything better), where it went from costing $7.99 in 2014 a month to $15.99 in 2019, literally double, and it will surely keep going up and up, if this trend continues and it surely will soon people will be paying $30 a month without any problem.

I understand that a market like Netflix (to follow the initial example) is an expensive market to maintain, both for equipment, staff and licenses and it is obvious that the economy is not the same in 2014 as it was in 2019, but how are people ok knowing that the price doubled in 5 years? If that continues in 2024 the price would be $30, and if it was people would still be fine paying it.

I don't use Netflix but I understand why people use it, both because of the recommendation algorithm and the simplicity, but damn, if in a year they say they are going to raise the price $5 a month people would be happy to pay it and I don't understand it, much less those who pay several memberships of the same type (Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, etc).

I thought I hated one of my lecturers, he seemed like he thought too much of himself as an academic, morally superior or whatever, and he has been cold to me a couple of times. I looked at his twitter and he retweeted some pro palestine shit and one related to RATM so I guess you shouldn't really judge a book by its cover eh?

even if it isn't much this is a start, I don't think he's a hardcore Marxist or whatever but even by retweeting this shit in the imperial core he is risking his job, which is a huge start.

i imagine the meeting will go something like this....

i walk in, they are standing in their executioner garbs... hooded robes.... there is a giant space laser in the conference room by the big table..... the tell me stand over there.......... while they calibrate the laser..... i do as i am told..........

the laser is now calibrated..... my fate is sealed.... "your fate is sealed," breanne tells me..... "step over here, in front of the laser," brad says.............. they calibrate the laser....... "any last words?"....... "no...." i whisper..... "my life began in squallor.... this was the only way it could have ended...... ill conceived..... dishonorably te-" and then mid diatribe they just blast me through the wall and i am vaporized

The socialist system will eventually replace the capitalist system; this is an objective law independent of man's will. However much the reactionaries try to hold back the wheel of history, sooner or later revolution will take place and will inevitably triumph.

Saw a TikTok about some woman asking why men have to disturb the peace of a Saturday or Sunday morning by mowing their lawn or using a leaf blower, and you would’ve thought she went on a bigoted rant by the comment section. Like damn she was just talking about how it would be nice to enjoy a peaceful morning and random commenters took it as a personal attack. Shit you not I truly believe some suburbanites would go to war over their lawn the way they treat it like a fortress to a castle.

Is this not extremely silly when you type it all out? Time is a circle and I feel like I’m a peasant under feudalism watching kings, nobles and knights protect their land like it’s under some type of threat

I'm not so sure that this post belongs here, and I want to clarify: I'm not asking for psychological help of any kind, just sharing my point of view and that's it.

Well, the title says it all, at my 20's I'm pretty exhausted of feeling that my life is going in circles and I'm not really sure where I'm going, I've read that many people of this age suffer from the same thing but really?

I mean, I'm really tired that humanity is so stupid and will never change and is constantly creating obstacles to make other people's lives miserable, and I'm sure that will go on until the end of time.

To be precise I do have goals in my life but really the bad things that constantly happen to me and that are unpredictable only take away more and more the desire to achieve those goals, and in the end I really don't even know why to achieve them and I end up really losing the motivation to achieve those goals.

Thanks for reading.

Accidental Renaissance of all places.

A user was describing their frustration about being down voted and ridiculed just for wanting the bombing of civilians to stop.

I just don't see it. The anti semitism that is

Slightly wound up by this tonight. So I apologise for the downer but have to get it off my chest.

I have a couple of small social media accounts. I dont share them about as I mostly just share music I like, maybe a bit of general politics. Nothing major. Years ago when I joined twitter I had a raft of people who would follow me just to gain my follow (including a couple of local minor celebrities like a weathergirl) only to unfollow a couple of days after. This lead to me locking my account for nearly a year on twitter.

I left twitter this September and joined a couple of other social media sites instead. Kind of disappointed with how Musk ruined Twitter.

I've been on mastodon, as an example, for the past couple of months now. Just this week I've noticed my follower count has dropped off a cliff. It seems this followback-unfollow practice has transferred from Twitter to other sites. I've even found one user bad mouthing me, forgetting that I am still following them and can see all of this (apparently I didnt share their music enough on the platform - I'm not a promoter, just a fan of music fcol. I am now no longer a fan of their music).

So I'd ask people, please don't do things like this. It just seems really rude. Follow/sub/whatever to people you find interesting. Don't do it for some kind of gain or clout.

Anyone else getting this on their socials recently? Did you end up blocking people?

Its just so exhausting and upsetting.

excerpt from a conversation from yesterday (CW transphobia)Transphobe 1: its too tall!

Transphobe 2: what is?

Transphobe 1 gestures at me

Transphobe 1: that thing

The conversation continued with additional transphobia.

And like i get it okay, im not a person, not even a human, but can we just skip the whole conversation? Or is the whole dehumanization and inflicting pain thing the enjoyable part?

I guess a positive is that it shows who the fake and fairweather allies are, like i was surrounded by people i thought were allies but no one said a damn thing. It was transphobe 2 that actually called out his friend cause 'you just cant say that stuff anymore' 🙄. Transphobe 1 proceeded to try and defend his actions by claiming he was using gender neutral language cause he didnt know how to gender me. Like, no motherfucker you fucking werent! Gender neutral language isnt dehumanizing language! Now i get to go organize an event with these same "allies" who said nothing. I demand that you shoot me now, so i dont have to do this.

Im not sure why im so upset about this. Its not that bad, really just par for the course. Not like he was beating me or anything. And allies should be assumed to be false unless otherwise proven. Its just so tiring. So damn exhausting.

Thanks for listening to me

Hey bbys (hexbear.net)

whatcha doing?

Me? Im celebrating the fact that my multi-segmented Barretts Esophagus hasnt spread beyond where it was at my last endoscopy and i tested negative for dysplasia again, too. Also cut me back from 3x endosopies a year to two. Its a big load off my shoulders. Im tired of cancer. I had to spend time in the hospital for skin cancer removal in a few spots, basal, squamous, and Merkel. Then i had plastic surgery to fix my face/nose from where the cancer got removed. 2023 has been pretty stressful.

One of these days its going to get me, but not yet so im ok with that.

I was at a pro-Palestine campus protest and there were times where I was instinctively uncomfortable because they were really hammering in the whole bit about reported 'antisemitic action on campus' being a non-issue and I had to remind myself that they aren't talking about people acting against Jews, they're talking about people acting against Israel.

It's my most personal and privileged grievance against Israel. I no longer know if a supposed threat to my safety is a bullshit bludgeon to silence pro-Palestine voices or if the yank reich is actually in town and I need to commute for the rest of the week.

I'll never forgive them for it. I'll never forgive them for a lot of things, but this is the most personal grievance I have, and since I'm born and raised a cracker suburbanite, it's the only one I truly, directly feel in my personal life.

I don't want this to override, you know, the actually important grievances that are at stake for Palestine here, and I don't want to make myself the center of this issue when I'm very much not at all, but I guess I've just been stewing in this for a bit, and I want to uncap it before it somehow causes me to become a weird crank through lack of addressing the root of the issue and it festering into my belief system shrug-outta-hecks

I recommend listening to the whole thing, but here's the nug:

YOUMNA ELSAYED: Yes, I just want to say one thing. I want to say this, and I want the world to remember my words. In my culture, in my language, we say, ”Kama tadinu tudan, walaw ba’ada heen.” In your culture, in your language, they say, “What goes around comes around.” And when it comes around, like this whole world is watching the genocides happening in the Gaza Strip, we shall be watching, too.

Israel fucked up. God damn journalists saying this openly? I mean, obviously the Western press won't cover this, but this is after Biden went whining to Qatar to reign in Al Jazeera lol

I held my nose for that shit in 2020 "to stop fascism" but fuck, this motherfucker endorsed genocide anyway. Not making that mistake again 🤢

They say how deranged it is to stand for more political causes than legal weed and free college. smuglord

They say how unhinged it is to want to slow, halt, and maybe even reverse the ongoing environmental damage to the only inhabitable planet that people living today will ever know. smuglord

They say it is tankie to actually want to improve society somewhat instead of feeling smugly satisfied that the way things are now are the best/only way they can possibly be. smuglord

They say it is immature it is to seek political agency and political participation beyond some election ritual every few years. smuglord

They say how insane it is to see some things as better or worse than other things instead of seeing political ideologies as interchangeable buffet offerings to ladle onto some personalized "to each their own" plate of whimsical and inconsequential consumer choice, with the exception of any choices made that are more left than Bernie Sanders. Such choices are only made by Russian/Chinese bots, and thusly forbidden from the buffet table, but fascist concepts and goals are like naughty and tempting desserts to consider and add at their leisure. smuglord

It's unlike the adults in the room to have strong feelings, or any feelings at all, for anything other than specifically approved purposes, one of those purposes being condescending contempt for others that have unsanctioned feelings. smuglord

I could go on, but to summarize, when some federated Lemmyverse liberal says "you're from Hexbear," the mask has just come off and what comes after that, and probably what came before it, can be summarized as scratched-to-unscratched liberalism from obscenely privileged and arrogant status quo warriors coming to the rhetorical defense of hierarchy and empire.

tl;dr: have a friend who has historically always been mad when his friends got a gf/wife. He acts like he's 15 years old and saying "bros before hoes" still. He calls me and other friends a yuppie or breeder, and he thinks crosswalks are authoritarian so he has to always be a "rebel" and make it seem like he has the most unique viewpoint in the world. He doesn't change anything about himself, and he's stubbornly proud of having "no filter." This has caused every wife/gf of his friends to not like him. He will never be invited to any kind of social event because he will say stupid shit. Like, nobody has to be a rabid commie all the fucking time. Him and my gf got into a huge fight because he always talks like an asshole, and i live with my gf, so he doesnt come to my house at all because he'll say some shit. He still brings up this fight when im around him, and it's like get the fuck over it. I basically don't share anything about my life that involves my partner now, because he'll say something fucking stupid about her. He also begins a lot of sentences with "well" or "actually" which is never helpful. He literally can't admin when he is wrong, even about the simplest shit.

This really all seemed to get worse once I started my current long term relationship, and then it got way worse when my gf got sick of his shitty attitude and how he treats everyone like an asshole. He literally just can't be chill at all. No leftist(or similar) should be ranting constantly about every single injustice during every single social situation. That is exhausting to be around, and there is a time and place for it, but there has to be an ability to switch that shit off.

Finding and keeping relationships requires changing yourself just a bit, and making compromises, and it's now become apparent he isn't capable of that.

related question: have you ever dumped a long time friend? This is all a somewhat recent change, like the past 3-4 years, and it really seems to be because im in a relationship like most of our friend group, so now he's totally alone. Ive heard him say he's in therapy but i have to wonder if that's true, because it clearly isn't working. I'm annoyed by him but I pity him too because he can't fucking change for anybody at all.
