aww so cute
Yeah! But they'll bite tho so better keep distance :x
They're predator species iirc? (Or I'm getting my terminology wrong) but this is a good sign of the health of the river! That means the ecosystem can support đ„°
Ya, but i kinda worry about the mudskipper and crab and monitor lizard now đ„Č
Don't worry, it should be OK. You can still find monitor lizards in the Klang River even with the otters around.
Youâll be surprised how animals can survive in the most dirty rivers/longkangs lol as long as the pollution is not from harsh chemicals. Just last week I noticed how the big storm drain behind Kajang wet market (super smelly as all kinds of rubbish from the pasar gets dumped into it every day) is full of large tilapia fish.
I'm not lmao calls up the Jurassic Park quote - for these otters in particular tho, it's like seeing wolves in the American wild e.g. Yellowstone Park. It's a good sign to see apex predators in previously depleted ecosystem, iirc.
good, bring back bullying to Malacca river
TIL that otters squeal
Otterly adorbs!
Aww. Are they native to the river or have they just moved in?
Can't wait to see otter gangs like in SG!
They just moved in! They're never here before
technically an invasive species, by right they should be taken away or they ruin the local habitat.
No, they are not. These otters are native to Malaysia. They only stay in rivers that are clean. Having these otters move to the Melaka river is a good sign the river is getting better.
Native to Malaysia doesnât mean theyâre native to that region no?
But if theyâre actually native to the Melaka river, and are now returning itâs a whole different story however.
i went to look it up, apparently we should have 4 native species, though the side of Malaysia where Melaka is, it should be the smooth-coated ones like these bbs
We need turf war man.
Who would win :
Malacca otter vs Singkie otter
Remember, Parameswara escaped to Melaka from TemasekâŠ
Subang people. Got very excited when otters were also spotted at Subang Lake. I went there a few times but did not see them but I wonder where they are hiding!
Yeah it's kinda hard to spot them. I have the luck to see a group of them playing at Garden By The Bay when i first went to Singapore
