Posting as a new thread just for visibility cause lolfederation (ya know, loltna's slightly more annoying cousin).

So at this point I think it's clear we're moving unless if some kind of miracle happens (and while we had the intent originally of waiting until March 18th for any finality in the decision I'm not sure if we'll survive that long lol).

I've spent the last couple days testing several instances (both Lemmy and Mbin) and checking how fast, slow or inoperable their respective Federations seem to be and personally I'm leaning towards the final decision being either Lemmy.zip or Fedia.io as the frontrunners for both software types. I feel Lemmy.zip may be the best choice as (despite no content aside from myself and Jello making the odd thread) the community has already pulled almost 60 subscribers, and Lemmy has a bigger pop/longer existence meaning it might be around longer than mbin/kbin, but that's a community choice.

So - Community Task Time!:

When you have a minute today please visit the SQ community on both:

https://fedia.io/m/SquaredCircle
https://lemmy.zip/c/squaredcircle

And I'd like you all to:

A) Make sure (from whatever instance you intend to keep using for your own personal account) that the community shows up for you. If 90% of you can't see one or the other, there's no point selecting it..

B) If they do, please comment on one of the existing posts (there's 1-2 on each community) just to make sure your comments go through and properly federating out. Just make a comment below confirming you did comment in either community so I can keep track when checking. If you already have commented or posted, you're good.

In the meanwhile I'm gonna resume posting news and whatnot on lemmy.zip so it's at least out there.

[-] Neon_Carnivore@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

You already saw my comments on lemmy.zip., so we know that's working. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to mess with fedia and other stuff because I have work tonight and should have been in bed over an hour ago.

[-] GeekFTW@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

Fair haha. We'll def test out fedia some more too. I can see a couple of the posts I made on fedia federated to lemmy.zip, kbin.social still isn't seeing it, dbzer0 just did so it could be working its way finally.

[-] Montagge@kbin.social 5 points 8 months ago

My only concern with Lemmy is it locks out the mastodon people

[-] cupcakezealot@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

i don't know a lot about kbin but i know i can access lemmy posts and everything from my mastodon account - or is there tighter integration in kbin?

[-] Kierunkowy74@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

Did you try to follow people here? Because on /kbin you can. Even from Mastodon. Even, when their posts don't match any magazine.

[-] roguetrick@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Mastodon users can and do post on Lemmy threads, Lemmy users just can't read what they post that aren't replies(whereas kbin users can, when federation is working). You'll notice microblog users because they use mentions when replying.

[-] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 6 points 8 months ago

@roguetrick and I don’t want to give it up!

[-] Montagge@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

Oh okay! That's good to know!

[-] fu@libranet.de 2 points 8 months ago

but i can remove the tags when I reply if I want to (or change the settings from default)

[-] TellumSiege@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

This is a great point. Does fedia do the same?

[-] Kierunkowy74@kbin.social 5 points 8 months ago

Not at all. Fedia runs a fork of /kbin and it should work the same like on /kbin.

[-] csm10495@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

Another left field option: I'm happy to turn over squaredcircle@sh.it.just.works if ya want.

Regardless I really wish we moved before the ppv. My Lemmy app doesn't see this post or the ppv thread 😢.

[-] Neon_Carnivore@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

I will ultimately go where the community goes, you guys are the reason I'm still here. No matter where we go, there will be some growing pains.

[-] GeekFTW@kbin.social 2 points 8 months ago

Just makes ya miss the days of normal forums (which technically is an option for us for the record with phpbb [or tapatalk if we were truly desperate lmao] but we'd shoot ourselves in the foot discoverability and growth wise lol.)

[-] Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 4 points 8 months ago

I've seen a few comments about UI on lemmy and just wanted to put it out there that we also have these interfaces you can use:

old.lemmy.zip and m.lemmy.zip - and while yes usually the m denotes a mobile interface but it also works really well on desktop/tablet if you don't like the usual lemmy interface :)

[-] JelloBrains@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

I still very much dislike Lemmy, and really like K/Mbin but they are both shitting the bed on Federation... I understand why things are heavily leaning toward Lemmy, I don't have to like it though and obviously, I made an account to keep posting with you lot.

[-] GeekFTW@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

I legit just got notifications just now at 5:23am for the convo we were having yesterday, on the other thread, via fedia lol

[-] Montagge@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

I'm getting notifications randomly that are old as hell lol

[-] GeekFTW@kbin.social 2 points 8 months ago

Got the notification for this one *checks* 15h later lmao

[-] JelloBrains@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

I didn't get notified of this until 3 AM this morning, so it seems even on Kbin notifications are delayed sometimes by hours.

[-] TellumSiege@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

I'm with you on that. Lemmy's interface, UI, whatever you want to call it just doesn't appeal to me that much. It really sucks that Kbin shit the bed.

[-] GeekFTW@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

It's quite disappointing. That being said Fedia is still on the options list once more of us test it out and ensure we can all see it and have no issues.

[-] GeekFTW@kbin.social 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Just about to start the PPV (after waking up to like fucking forty plus notifications coming through from the last few days jesus fuck kbin.

I'm quite glad to see with 184 comments that kbin seemingly didn't shit the bed during the PPV (though I didn't go through the comments yet so maybe it did at some point lol).

I'm gonna make another post or two on Fedia today and keep testing federation as well while catching up on the show, but I do wanna take a moment to thank all of you for the patience you've had lately with how shits been going. This has been the kind of shit that makes a mother fucker wanna go back to Reddit (if Reddit wasn't run by coked up half dead knob-heads of course) but we'll get through this shit.

Edit: Fedia is currently 1h since posting and nothing visible on 3-4 other instances.

Edit2: Ernest isn't dead! https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/875274/RE-Is-Ernest-still-here#comments

Edit 3: Fedia is currently 3h since posting and nothing visible on 3-4 other instances.

Edit 4: Almost at 6h.

Edit 5: Well it went through at some point but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[-] n7gifmdn@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

My instance lemmy.ca or maybe my app, summit, can't find !squaredcirle@fedia.io but can !squaredcircle@lemmy.zip though it won't let me subscribe for Some reason.

[-] sorghum@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago

I posted on .zip. Voyager doesn't seem to want to handle the fedia.io link

[-] zjti8eit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 months ago

I was able to comment and subscribe to lemmy.zip using Summit, but it couldn't find !squaredcirle@fedia.io

[-] hellothere@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago

A) fedia doesn't appear to be syncing with sh.itjust.works

B) lemmy.zip works well, and we're now over 90 users!

[-] fu@libranet.de 2 points 8 months ago

@GeekFTW I was able to follow lemmy.zip but i didn't see any content to comment on so I tried to post a test thread. libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-1…
