context: this meme is 3 years old. think about what everyone including that gentleman in the back did to protect everyone around them.

[-] Lev_Astov@lemmy.world 68 points 1 year ago

A lot of people still don't understand that most masks are only really good for protecting others rather than the wearer and that this was the main point of asking people to wear them. I've seen people have revelations and change their opinion about masks upon having this explained.

I've seen more who openly don't give a fuck.

[-] makeasnek@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 year ago

High quality masks like N95s are incredibly effective at protecting the wearer when used properly.

people are still dying from COVID & people think it's "old news" lol

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 110 points 1 year ago

In the "quiet" COVID month of July 1990 people died of COVID, compared to 86 people with influenza.

And that's a quiet month.

[-] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 255 points 1 year ago

Read July 1990 as a date not: in July, 1990 people

[-] CosmicTurtle@lemmy.world 83 points 1 year ago

God thank you for the clarification. For a quick second I thought I had jumped the timeline to one where Clinton handled COVID.

Read "read" as imperative rather than past tense

Lmao so did I. I was so confused.

Read "Read" as a command instead of a past tense :)

Tough day for keyboards today

[-] kautau@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I will send back this PR as an incorrect date format, I already am triggered by this lack of a comma

I too would wear a mask, headphones and probably a sleepmask if I were forced to sit next to someone who enjoys Ayn Rand.

It's not very safe though, you never know when such person would have idea to excercise their freedom and virtues on your belongings and/or body.

My workplace just went back to masking because it's already kicking off to be a banger of a respiratory illness season. I'll use whatever I can to remind people it's not just about your comfort.

[-] Mr_Buscemi 39 points 1 year ago

Be sure to get the new booster. I delayed getting it by a week and tested positive Saturday morning. Sinus + Upper Respiratory infection has been a fun thing to experience lmao.

Worst part so far was last night when I couldn't tell I was eating expired kimchi until I took a closer look. Lack of smell or taste can be tricky lol.

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Oh wow that would have sucked!

I can't get another booster until November because of the timing of my last shot but definitely will. Getting my flu shot tomorrow though. The amount of plain old non-COVID respiratory illness in the hospitals around here is absolutely wild, like just plain old pneumonia.

I did the same thing when I last had covid, ate a salad which was expired by 10 days…

[-] GCostanzaStepOnMe@feddit.de 39 points 1 year ago

There's a new type of long covid where you can't stop posting about the covid years.

[-] Whelks_chance@lemmy.world 59 points 1 year ago

I know of 4 people who have had it within the last 2 months. We're still in the COVID years.

[-] Holzkohlen@feddit.de 10 points 1 year ago

I just had it. Only ever got hit midly, but man does it ever linger. That tiny cough stays for weeks. Probably useful from a virus's evolutionary pov. I'm not sick enough to stay at home, but I am sick enough to infect others. Those dubious fucking viruses man!

[-] Contend6248@feddit.de 56 points 1 year ago

Which place are you visiting where you get non-stop covid posts?

[-] GCostanzaStepOnMe@feddit.de 9 points 1 year ago
[-] Instigate@aussie.zone 31 points 1 year ago

There have been over 30 posts to this community in the last 24 hours. This is the only one that mentions COVID.

It's definitely not over dude.

I caught it after one person infected over a dozen people at a birthday party last week.

I spent over two days locked to a couch unable to handle any food with a 104 fever and now I'm mostly just dealing with the leftover sinus & upper respiratory infection it caused.

And this is honestly one of the first covid posts I've seen here in a bit. No idea what you are talking about.

[-] Squirrel@thelemmy.club 10 points 1 year ago

I avoided COVID for 3 years and have had it twice since July.

[-] explodicle@local106.com 84 points 1 year ago

Fact: all memes are from the past

Except for the ones on c/surrealmemes. Those are from outside time and space. A realm known only as Cory's Basement.

[-] MTLion3@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

Love Cory’s Basement - dude has all kinds of wild shit down there. Saw myself as a turnip once

The woman is reading The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand. The meme is using the book as a caption, to highlight the selfishness of the woman's actions (not wearing a mask). There's an additional layer as well.

Ayn rand is an (incredibly horny) author. She developed Objectivism, a philosophical school of thought that functions off the idea of knowledge and values are objective. That "they exist and are determined by the nature of reality, to be discovered by one's mind, and are not created by the thoughts one has". Objectivism is popular among conservatives as it appeals to their world view. The "facts over feelings" crowd in particular loves to dickride Ayn Rand.

Some notable fans of her work include Elon Musk, Peter Theil, Amber Heard, Ben Shapiro, and Jordan Peterson. That's not relevant to the meme, I just want to highlight that objectivism is a joke and the people who support it are awful.

[-] HawlSera@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago

Selfishness as a virtue?

Christ, how can anyone listen to Ayn Rand after becoming an objectivist and not getting serious are we the baddies energy
