currently juggling between active and hot sorts and both seem to return the same crap throughout the day... what sort works best for you?

New, Top Six Hour and Top Twelve Hour

[-] palitu@lemmy.perthchat.org 14 points 1 year ago

Yep, top 6 And new.

The problem with new is that there are never any comments

[-] penguin@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I've had the best experience with top 6 hours for all. Blocked a couple communities but not as many as I would've thought.

[-] Denalduh@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago

I've been browsing All -> New

I've been blocking communities or instances I don't want to see. It took a day or two but now I'm discovering some great communities all the time. As my community list grows, I'll eventually swap to my subscribed feed.

[-] joe@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I mostly use kbin; how do you block communities or instances in lemmy? I didn't see an obvious way to do this, but I am often oblivious so that's not as conclusive as I'd wish it to be, haha

[-] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 year ago

In Lemmy, there should be a button on the sidebar for communities. You can't block instances (yet)

[-] joe@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Oh, that button is (correctly) hidden if you've joined the community, haha

[-] such_fifty_bucks@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

I've been using Connect on Android because it supports keyword filters (musk and reddit alone make my feed much more tolerable) and instance blocking. Was using Jerboa since coming over early June but switched the other day when I read someone mentioning its filtering capabilities.

It's decent overall, but supreme in eliminating musk spam and lemmynsfw from your All feeds.

[-] Denalduh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I was able to block instances with Connect. Currently using the Sync for Lemmy internal beta and that functionality hasn't been added in yet.

With Connect, it was as simple of clicking on the overflow menu and hitting block community or block instance. Worked like a charm!

[-] joe@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I flip between mobile and desktop too much to rely on any app-specific features. I do have connect but I usually just go to the webpage even on my phone.

[-] danwardvs@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 year ago

Hot is generally broken, I use top 6 hours to get new posts that actually have comments.

[-] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 year ago

I've been wondering if Hot is broken for everybody. For my subscribed page it shows 7 month old posts with no comments on the first page... makes no sense.

[-] DrQuint@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It shouldn't be THAT broken, however, broke it absolutely is and there was even some github issues on the matter.

Apparently a side effect of lemmy.world going into maintenance so often is that the hot sort refreshes itself a bit.

[-] SamC@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

It's been fixed in the next release

[-] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Subscribed New is my default

[-] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I think "Active" is a great default sort for the exact reason you describe, that posts are a lot "stickier" on Lemmy than they were on reddit and you always get good conversation there even days after the post.

Also, it means that we get memes out of our systems way faster, nobody is even talking about the can of beans after day 2.

[-] mancy@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

Using Top 6 hours now because Hot is broken. Once it’s fixed I’m back to Hot though.

[-] thingsiplay@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

@mancy ~~I mainly use Hot and New. What is broken about Hot? And I don't understand how Top works, because its neither top likes nor top comments.~~ Edit: Never mind, I'm on Kbin and this topic is about Lemmy.

[-] Marmanvii@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

After a couple of posts it starts showing several years old posts

[-] thingsiplay@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

@Marmanvii ~~Doesn't happen for me.~~ OH WAIT! I just noticed this is Lemmy. I am on Kbin and saw this through federated content (or through subscribed servers). So never mind then.

[-] Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

If there’s a constant onslaught of new posts in your subscriptions and you read stuff several times every day, go with hot.

If the feed is relatively quiet, but you still want to see something new every few hours, sort by new.

If you check Lemmy only once a day, try active or top of 24 h.

[-] axzxc1236@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I browse lemmy in these orders:

  1. Communities I subscribed, sort by new.

  2. Active All, I've blocked a few meme communities so I don't see them much.

  3. Top 6 hours All.

  4. Top 1 hour All.

[-] Steve@compuverse.uk 6 points 1 year ago

My default is Top6Hours

[-] wwaxwork@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Top 6 Hours seems to change the most for me so that's the one I use, I only check out Lemmy a couple of times a day with my morning and afternoon coffees. Active when I want to deep dive into comments. and if I was here all the time then new would be my sort preference.

[-] cadamanteus@mander.xyz 5 points 1 year ago

There is not yet enough content for your sort selection to really matter. I sort by new because at least I'll see more content as stuff is posted throughout the day.

[-] andrewta@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I just go with new

[-] poquito_cabeza@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I sort by active because I like to read comments.

I use Voyager with the option to Mark posts as read on scroll, and then I just hide all the read posts to get a fresh feed.

[-] reNou@feddit.ch 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I always use "New" for my subscribed communities and use "Active" or "Hot" for those outside of my instance because it gets a bit overwhelming.

[-] small44@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Subscribed --> new. If there's not enough content for that day I go to the all tab in the chronological order

[-] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

I use top 6 hours and new comments. New comments is nice because it keeps active posts showing up even when they get days old. It also appears to show new posts as well.

[-] azdle@news.idlestate.org 3 points 1 year ago

Just upgraded to 0.18.3-rc.4 and the Hot sort seems to be fixed now. (I'd guess Active would be too.) So, that now. Before I pretty much only used Top X Hours based on when I last looked.

Though, now that I'm looking at Hot, the communities I'm in definitely feel a whole lot more active.

[-] Bongles@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Top 12 hours. Top day gives me stuff I saw already

[-] Jamie@jamie.moe 2 points 1 year ago

Top Day/x hours in descending order, based on last visit. Gives you the top voted stuff made in more recent time. Though my default sort is actually by new.

[-] Candelestine@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I sort by new most of the time, just for the most variety.

[-] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I’m using local and hot but voyager’s hide read posts feature greatly helps to filter out what I’ve already seen. It feels a lot more comfortable.

[-] gratux 1 points 1 year ago

on Liftoff I can sort by Top 1 Hour or Top 6 Hours, idk if that's a standard lemmy thing

[-] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

That's standard

[-] NightOwl@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Hot and active showed too much old content. So I've gone with new and different variations of top _ hour.

[-] GustavoM@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Subscribe to some communities that interests you, then comments/subscribed.

[-] BrooklynMan@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

i tend to sort by Hot as a default. sometimes I sort by New to catch stuff that's up-and-coming.

i usually browse only my subscribed feed, but I'll dip into All sometimes to see if there's anything interesting in communities i don't subscribe to, but it's usually just memes.

[-] tr00st@lemmy.tr00st.co.uk 1 points 1 year ago

I go with New personally, though I don't subscribe to all that much - I imagine that it would be a bit less pleasant if you're on a hundred different communities.
