What chat software do people here use? (lemmy.ml)

Hi guys, I want to communicate with people here via chat if possible, and just wondering what people here are using?

I want to use a protocol if possible, and definitely not discord or some other software run by a corporation. Obviously IRC was the thing to use back in the day. Do people still use it or something else?

I love the fediverse and the idea of getting away from the big tech companies, and am looking for whatever real time chat software is recommended right now. Thanks.

I use Telegram personally, but that doesn't meet your requirements probably

I love telegram but it's hard to get other people to try telegram. I just love that I can send any file type easily and of pretty much any size on desktop or mobile.
