Hi, I have a primary school girl who wants her share of gaming on the family android tablet.

While finding open source or commercial games with no ads that boys like is doable, I haven't been able to find the kind of games a girl wants:

  • with cute graphics
  • where you care for dolls or pet
  • no ads or subscriptions, no endless DLC.

Do you have any recommendations for android games that fit the bill?

The image is a screenshot of cry babies, a game that she'd like to play very much but constantly nags you to buy new content.

I've searched elsewhere without a valid option. TIA.

Adding 16 KB Page Size to Android (android-developers.googleblog.com)

Android 15 has been refactored to support using 16 KB page sizes, and file systems like EROFS and F2FS have been made compatible.

A page is the granularity at which an operating system manages memory. Most CPUs today support a 4 KB page size and so the Android OS and applications have historically been built and optimized to run with a 4 KB page size. ARM CPUs support the larger 16 KB page size. When Android uses this larger page size, we observe an overall performance boost of 5-10% while using ~9% additional memory.

In order to improve the operating system performance overall and to give device manufacturers an option to make this trade-off, Android 15 can run with 4 KB or 16 KB page sizes.

The very first 16 KB enabled Android system will be made available on select devices as a developer option. This is so you can use the developer option to test and fix (if needed) your applications to prepare for Android devices with 16 KB page sizes in the near future.

One of my favorite aspects of folding phones is the return of the fingerprint sensors built directly into the power button. This is objectively the ideal design, for reasons I assume I don't have to explain.

Lately, however, the novelty of folding phones is wearing off and I'm starting to think I'd just like something lighter and sleeker. Are there any recommendations for a phone with a power-button sensor that still has good specs and cameras?

Edit: for the purposes of this post, physical sensors on the back of the phone also count, since they can wake the phone and unlock it simultaneously.

And to clarify (I thought this was a thing everyone just inherently agreed on), the benefits of physical sensors are:

  1. accuracy. A physical sensors will always be more accurate (and thus have fewer issues) because it doesn't have to work THROUGH the screen. This has been improved a lot with newer technologies like ultrasonic readers, but it is literally impossible to be better than the same technology utilized without a screen in the way.
  2. wake/unlock in one motion. Since it's also a button, it can wake the phone and unlock it in one motion, rather than 2 separate ones. Again, newer tech has sort of worked around this with things like lift to wake or just having the sensor area ALWAYS scanning so you can unlock it from sleep regardless, but these are clunky software implementations that rely on your phone constantly actively trying to to figure out whether you're doing the thing or not, so it again can't be as efficient as just a normal button. Battery impact for these is also pretty minimal for the most part, but it's still not zero.
  3. tactility. You can feel the button, and manufacturers can put it where your hand naturally rests, meaning that you can unlock the phone BEFORE you have even taken it out of your pocket.
  4. cost. Physical sensors are hella cheap y'all. The technology to read the ridges on your finger through a sheet of plastic and glass is (turns out) kind of expensive. We're all being forced to pay for this dumb gimmick.
  5. durability. Screens get scratched and dinged up, which compromises the sensors ability to read. Physical sensors on the other hand are basically the most durable part of the phone. Again, mostly a non issue on newer phones, but it's yet another thing manufacturers have had to dump money into working around (and thus charging you more for).
  6. not impacted by screen protectors, rain on the screen, etc.

Ahead of a bigger update to let you access saved Tab Groups, Chrome for Android is adding the ability to color-code them...

The Google Pixel 9 is the first Google phone in the US to support call recording, thanks to the new Call Notes feature.

I am finally back to having a rooted phone after a decade! Feels nice to have control over my phone again.

The only thing left to get working again for me is the Samsung Wear connection to my Watch6.
I can get pretty far in the setup, but it eventually says it can't connect.

I tried the Magisk module GoogleSpoofForWear and even edited my .prop file, no luck! Safetynet passes and playintegrity is intact.

Followed every guide I could find, so reaching out to you guys for help! anyone get their watch working on a rooted phone? (android 14)

Edit "Solution": I was able to get it to work after fully resetting my watch. I kept the app magisk hidden but not sure if it was necessary... I didn't want to have to do that but at least it works now!

I got this RCA Reno it’s sluggish but in excellent condition, so I’m wondering if I could do any hacking to it to make it more smoothly operable.

Got a android recently and wanted to replace the default os with a new one, I've seen mentions of others (lineage OS, Graphite OS) but wanted to know what are some good ones and why.

Hi everybody,

I've been unable to make sense or gain better understanding of the Android update system, so I'm asking here.

Coming from the linux desktop, there's two main parts of the system: the kernel and the userland. I could simply update the kernel without updating userland and vice-versa.

But does it work the same way on Android? Why are we so dependent on OTA updates from the individual manufacturer? I understand that microcode is proprietary and can come only from the device manufacturer, but aren't kernel updates and userland decoupled from this (for devices which support project treble and GKI)? Can't I just run a different FOSS launcher, get the upstream GKI kernel and run it with the microcode offered by the manufacturer?

What consists of an Android "version"? Can't I just not update the microcode beyond what the manufacturer provides, and instead keep updating the kernel (by "kernel" I mean GKI and not the actual linux kernel) and userland and in essence keep updating my android version?

I'm probably missing some fundamental understanding of android here, which is why decided to ask here. Thanks for your help!

By now, most people in the custom ROM community must have already heard of KernelSU. I do think that it is worth the hype and is truly revolutionary, piggybacking on something I credit Google on (to some personal chagrin) - KMI.

The question I have is: when I attempt to install OTA updates to a device with KernelSU running as a Kernel module, will that affect KernelSU? Will I have to root again?

Since launch, Google Messages has not allowed RCS on more than one phone number, but the app looks to be readying support for dual/multi SIMs.

I need to be inside an app, activate the action, so it takes a screenshot, then scrolls, and then again the screenshot and so on.

I can do it manually, but it is too much content I need to back up.

I don't mind if I have to purchase an app.

Thank you for your help.

Note: If you don't want to deal with stuff like this, I recommend you download and use it from F-Droid client or Accrescent AppStore.

Update: The app returned to the App Store.

So at the moment Apple hold the 1st place in mobile OS marketshare, I feel the unfortunate thing that will happen as marketshare drops Google will slowly move to supporting projects other than android, and eventually drop support entirely and focus on making better iOS apps, Device makers will start making their own operating systems with tighter locked down appstores in order compete with iOS, we already see this with Amazon planning to switch to a linux based OS in future fire devices.

It is at a slightly cheaper value than YouTube Premium in my country and offers multiple games and few apps. Though the quality of the games are sometimes poor (I think Apple Arcade has some exclusive games for itself something which Play Pass lacks) and apart from apps like Tasker or KWGT, one would be hard pressed to find a good dev offering for apps in general.

stock pixel os had a feature where you could "pause" unnecessary apps. any way to do that? on graphene os currently. I already use saver tuner on extreme, but I don't need Google play services, or my email, or any of that. manually disabling the app also removed it from the home screen which is less than ideal. thanks guys. basically I'd like to reduce it down to SMS, call, music, browser
