I recall reading somewhere that an early draft of The Force Awakens opened with a shot of Luke's hand floating through space.
Which doesn't make any sense as it was cut off in the atmosphere of a gas giant. Not that logic or details would get in the way of JJ.
Somehow Luke's hand has returned.
