Well, i decided to brush up my simple HTML page and created a fully linked wiki on the subject. Please take a look, in the hope it will be useful for at least one fellow one-eyed leg-pegged passionate data hoarder.

Any hints or suggestions is appreciated.

Why specifically Gentoo? Alpine looks more like the tool for this job.

[-] Shimitar@feddit.it 24 points 1 year ago

Because i am a long time Gentoo User and i feel like it's perfect for the job. that's what i use and i what i like

Interesting decision

It's a great guide, thank you for sharing. No clue why everyone thinks Gentoo is a wrong choice for the job.

Gentoo is a bit of a weird choice but maybe I am prejudiced from using it as a Desktop environment versus use as a server. But in any case, good to write this up.

And by not using any docker, you can be 100% sure of what you are actually installing. instead of resorting to trust binaries somebody else put together in an opaque container.

Why a weird choice? It's lightweight and very secure since it doesn't come with any useless services by default, and i mean it :)

It's a bit of an uncommon distro for servers but it's a fine choice. :)

probably just people who don't want to bother with compiling everything would be my guess

I've seen a chunk of self hosting posts & this guide also looks awesome. Main issue right is hardware. I have a laptop from 2012 but it lacks USB 3.0 & I'm not sure if it could handle something like this. I'm quite excited to continue researching this & giving a shot though!

Usb2 should work, its up to 30+ megabytes per second, enough for 1080p h264 streaming (6megabits per second).

Hardware is not keeping you from trying

Doesn't load over Tor right now?

[-] Shimitar@feddit.it 2 points 1 year ago

No idea. The page is up and it's working from clear web anyway.

[-] loudWaterEnjoyer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 11 months ago

It does indeed not load via TOR

[-] quincy@chaos.social 1 points 11 months ago

@loudWaterEnjoyer @Shimitar

Now it does. Maybe I got lucky.

Fellow italian pirate here, using Gentoo for servers and laptop since 2014. Very interesting, thank you for sharing. Would love to have a chat someday

[-] drunkensailor@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 months ago

Appears to be down now, getting 500 proxy error. If it matters, I'm on vpn, like any good sailor ought to be

[-] Shimitar@feddit.it 1 points 11 months ago

It might, at times, it's behind a convoluted set of proxies of course.

[-] drunkensailor@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 months ago

in any case, seems to be working for me now. same pc, same vpn, same dns, connected via same vpn server. so no clue
