Everyone in MGS apparently speaks like that because that's how you speak in Japanese, when you acknowledge something you just repeat it as a question instead of saying something like "oh cool", normally it's localized away.

Everyone in MGS speaks like that because that's how you speak in Japanese?

Oh, cool.

[-] modus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Oh you think that's cool?

That reminds me of my best friend. He's a veterinarian.

I've always wondered if that was the case. I've also noticed that a lot of translated sentences end with some variation of "isn't it?" and figure there's some similar linguistic quirk at play.

Desu ne? Is my very uneducated guess on what is translating to isnt it?

Naruhodo (doesn't Naruhodo at all)

[-] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 3 points 4 days ago

i never opened a japenese dictionary but my guess is you say "sodesuka" when you agree with sth, but you say "naruhodo" when you figured something out anew

[-] MrRandom@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago

ain't that so?

[-] coolie4@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

They did the same thing in Final Fantasy X. I found it a bit annoying ending every sentence with "ya?" At first I thought it was just a quirk they added to Wakka to make him seem more like a chill islander, but then other characters started to do it too, and I realized it was probably a translation from "ね?"

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Can confirm your realization. That hirogana's romani is "ne" which is pronounced such that it rhymes with "fiancé" (which is close to "nay" but the y technically adds an "ee" sound at the very end which isn't present in "ne").

Functionally, it works just like the Canadian "eh" (when used correctly, not added to the end of all sentences like an American parody of a Canadian), to the point where I've been wondering if Japanese is the origin for the Canadian bit (or if they share a common origin that was brought over with one or more of the waves of natives crossing to Alaska).

You two make me miss that game so much. Thank you, very interesting

My favorite pornography films work that way.

It's actually a practical way to answer, because it tells the person making the statement whether the listener heard them correctly.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago

Its respect.

If you can reiterate it... you were actually paying attention.

Just saying 'oh neat!', you're being flippant, in comparison.

[-] Johanno@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

A häagen-dazs? Colonel, what's an American ice cream brand doing here??

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 20 points 4 days ago

It works well in a spy satire. The number 1 agent can’t even remember how to eat until their handler reminds them? It plucks you up from the ground and firmly plants you back in the silly pot

“A toddler, you say?”, you say?

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Say you say?

[-] Asafum@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

There's a game Where Winds Meet that tried to implement and LLM for some NPC interactions and some of them would reward you if you helped them with their issues. People found that doing the Solid Snake conversation method would always end up successfully helping them lol

This makes me wanna play MGS again. One of the few games - maybe the only one - I finished more than once. Being from the PSX era it still holds up well. It’s honestly a masterpiece and I’m so happy that I was able to play it as a kid when it was released.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

One of my great gaming shames is that I've never actually played any metal gear game...

[-] VerilyFemme 9 points 4 days ago

FYI, Metal Gear Solid 1 was explicitly designed to be beaten by adults with jobs over a weekend.

You wouldn't expect it with Kojima's current design philosophy, but MGS1 is quite digestable.
