Put the hose on her

Neighbour of nightmares

[-] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 4 points 23 hours ago

I hate cops, but I like the idea of having someone be responsible for noise complaints. So ideally the government would fund a new "neighbourhood service" who are responsible for resolving domestic squabbles and mental health crises, but don't have the authority to arrest anyone or carry any kind of weapon. And they would be able to tell people not to blast music in the yard for the express purpose of annoying others.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 7 hours ago

They exist in the UK. They're called Community Support Officers (CSO) and they're useless.

They don't have the ability to arrest anyone, so all they can essentially do is go "hey you're being a twat, please stop" and then of course they don't, which results in the police turning up. They essentially serve to slow the entire process of getting the noise turned down.

Sometimes you see a CSO and an actual cop doing the rounds together, and you always look at them and you think, what the bloody hell is the point in that?

[-] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 1 points 7 hours ago

CSOs should be able to write tickets for a progressive income fine and/or community service. The problem is all the power to threaten people (financially, physically, or otherwise) is solely in the hands of police. So police still have to do everything. CSOs should have some powers, just not any physically violent powers.

They may in fact be able to write fines,I do not know because writing of fines isn't really what is needed in that scenario. You need somebody with your authority to actually force the issue if challenged. Sure they could write a fine and then call the police as backup, but the police could also write a fine when they get there, the situation remains the same, the police are needed in order to rectify the actual problem. CSO certainly can't compel people to attend court so they have less authority than bounty hunters who barely have any legal authority themselves.

People who are likely to capitulate to a CSO are also likely to capitulate if you just go round to their house and complain on your own.

The reason people don't like CSOs is if you complain to them about a local issue, all they can do is pass that on to the police, but I could just call the non-emergency number up and do that directly and it would probably get a faster response. Yet if people complain that the police don't properly patrol their communities, the police respond by sending in useless CSOs as a sort of fig leaf and then pretend to have dealt with the issue.

[-] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 1 points 4 hours ago

I looked it up, and CSOs are actually part of the police, which is the first problem. The second problem is they can't issue fines. I don't think someone should be arrested for playing loud music on a balcony, I don't believe that's a proportional response outside of the most dire circumstances involving severe sensory processing disorders. But I do think they should be fined a certain percentage of their income and assets which increases based on their tax bracket. And I do think that's a convincing deterrent. "How many grand is that song worth to you? Because if you keep playing it, you're gonna have to pay up."

A Scottish woman that can't spell neighbour? I mean I know the education system is supposed to be bad in Scotland but I have doubts about this meme... 😂.

Neighbor is the correct spelling in the usa, and as such is a common way that autocorrect writes the word / won’t get underlined as being spelled wrong.

But regardless of whether or not the word is correctly spelled: why should mistyping a single letter mean the education system is shit? Itd increfibly eazy ti fat finher or mss lettrs when typing and if a word isn’t underlined in red I imagine most people won’t check if it’s the right spelling

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 8 points 1 day ago

Last time I checked Scotland wasn't in the USA 🤔. Gulf of Scotland? Maybe that's Trump's next big move 😉.

But I take your point about autocorrect. And perhaps you need to be a little bit more up to date with Scottish politics to understand the education jibe.

At the end of the day it's a silly meme on the internet.

[-] egrets@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

This is snobby of me to say, but the general level of skill in writing in the UK - as in the US - is shockingly low.

[-] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 1 points 23 hours ago

Also, a lot of Scots use American spellings sometimes because of internet influence

[-] Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

But I take your point about autocorrect.

To be fair, autocorrect will correct it according to the system and keyboard language and I have questions as to why a Scottish person would select English (US) as their system or keyboard language

[-] bufalo1973@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Maybe it was the default.

Well shit.

There you go. She is Scottish and can't spell. I would never have guessed but fair play I was wrong.

TIL that a Spanish mid (at best) beer makes it to the UK!

At least it's not Cruzcampo, I guess.

[-] Denjin@feddit.uk 5 points 1 day ago

Oh don't you worry, we have that swill here too.

San Miguel is Filipino in origin.

Plus, it's made under licence in the UK now.

Funnily enough, Cruz is actually better in the UK than Spain. I'm putting it down to the water quality in Edinburgh is better than Seville.

[-] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Apparently (according to wikipedia), San Miguel was founded by a group of Spanish monks who decided to open the first beer business in SE Asia. Specifically in the San Miguel district of the then Spanish-controlled Manila.

After Spain lost the war there, they moved both the company and the production back to Spain, although in some places like US San Miguel beer that's sold is done under the Filipino brand instead of the Spanish one. However, I'd argue that out of pure convenience, the one sold in the UK should be the Spanish (or maybe UK produced under the Spanish brand) and not Filipino one. But that's just speculation, as I don't like that beer and I don't live in the UK to corroborate this.

Edit: interesting the bit about cruz tasting better there. In Andalusia, they call that beer "dog pee" and only Sevillians defend it out of pride.

[-] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

I know the Philippines were under Spanish rule when it was made back in 1890 but I'd still class it as Filipino.

Out of the mainstream generic beers in Spain I left Estrella Galicia and Mahou Cinco Estrellas.

There's a few craft beer bars around but I end up paying UK prices.

Just give me a caña on a terrace on a hot day for under €2 please

I wasn't discussing it, just reporting my findings. My only point to argue is that since now they are two different "san miguel" brands, the one you are drinking there is the one coming from Spain.

From the mainstream brands, I'd recommend (on top of those two which are really good), Alhambra. The 1922 is probably the best of them all.

Also: yeah, I'd love a caña under 2€ here too. In Italy you can't find a beer (let alone a decent one) under 3€, Spain has a really cheap alcohol!!

If by that you mean obnoxious, attention-seeking, confrontational woman, then yes. I feel bad for her neighbors.

[-] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 2 points 1 day ago

That too, yes. Beyoncé is somewhat beyond the pale, I'll admit.
