I'm looking for Android games that are designed to be played vertically (portrait mode). Could be casual, action, puzzle, roguelike, or anything really. Best if it can be played one-handed.

Paid or not doesn't matter.

Feel free to exclude the pay-to-win crowd. Still, name 'em if you feel you have an excellent exception.

Here are some FOSS games on Android that can be played on a portrait orientation.

Mental Math

Tessel - A tiling game

Flang - it's like chess, but not chess.

2048

BlastOff - endless runner

Chip Defense - it is a tower defence type of game, and is one of my favourites. You should try it.

Thank you. Also for directly linking it. Installed Chip Defense straight away. Am curious. ๐Ÿ™‚

Not exactly an Android exclusive thing, but I like to play GameBoy ROMs vertical so it feels more like a gameboy color.

[-] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 2 points 14 hours ago

I just finished Monument Valley 2 and adored it. Short little puzzle game where you kind of mix the background and foreground together to progress. There's 3 of them.

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago

Nethack runs good in vertical. I use the version called Pathos. Good dungeon crawler.

[-] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 2 points 17 hours ago

For casual time wasters, Feudal Tactics and Shattered Pixel Dungeon are good games.

A couple I enjoy:

  • Tents and Trees
  • OneBit Adventure

A 3DS emulator like Azahar or DS emulator like MelonDS both of which are on the Play store, and play a Pokemon game or anything turn based. Play it vertically. Different puzzle games

Try this FREE mystery horror puzzle text game where you are doing detective work... of sorts?

I got so hooked and absolutely loved it all the way.

Don't be fooled by the cover graphic or name.

Ps. It's playable on browser on any platform, you can save to disk, and did I say it' FREE?

Now that's an insider tip! ๐Ÿ™‚

I guess it's my turn to say it in a thread:

Shattered pixel dungeon

Best classic roguelike on mobile IMO

I was going to also suggest Downwell but it doesn't seem to be available any more

Itโ€™s an older game, but Downwell is fun. Just a little action/arcade game where you fall down a well and try to get combos by not touching the ground by bouncing off of enemies.

Here is one that is quality and engaging if you like a good story:

Surprisingly, mindustry hasn't been mentioned yet! Great quality, well thought out, addictive combination of tower defence, RTS and factory building.

[-] original_reader@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I got it. What a masterpiece!

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 days ago

Also vector pinball is very good

Awesome.

Here is another that I found recently. Awesome little gem. Hoping it will get saving capability at one point, but it's great as is:

Tessel (F-Droid)

[-] Brosplosion@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Dawncaster is a great deck builder that's vertical if you are into those!

[-] original_reader@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Great suggestion. Thanks!

[-] Breadhax0r@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Deep rock galactic survivors is on mobile now and it works in both portrait and landscape mode

[-] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Thank you so much. I've been playing it on pc but haven't found much time recently. This is perfect for me.

[-] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

You can also play the PC version on Android with GameNative.

[-] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's interesting. I might look into it cause the playstore one requires playstore. I don't have google apps and downloaded the apk. Weird cause most games work fine I have microg too.

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Goddamn this is knowledge you could have kept to yourself

I'm only just over having balatro on my phone

[-] MrRubik@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago
[-] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Except for the lack of official gamepad support, in before anyone links to that one github with the hardcoded screen coordinates

[-] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

The different types of Gameboys and most of their games emulate really well on a smart phone. I prefer playing them in landscape orientation for the larger display, but portrait mode gives a more accurate recreation with the screen on top and buttons on bottom.

I'm out of touch with what the latest best options are for emulators and where to source your ROMs, but if you ask around in communities focusing on things like piracy, they'll point you in the right direction.

Recommended to use a VPN for any downloads.

I haven't played it in a million years but I remember Cut The Rope being really fun.

[-] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 days ago

Tessel is a beautiful tile puzzle game

F-Droid

[-] KubrickFR@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I would highly recommend Monument Valley (1,2 and 3 is coming soon) as far as puzzle goes, for a quick arcade fix, I like Breakout 71 (with rogue-lite elements) and all games by Arnold Rauers (Card Crawl being my favorite, but by a small margin).

Here's a quick selection from the top of my head, if you want I can go throw my app history for a few more :)

I'll do ya one better, the Simon Tatham's puzzle collection. http://chris.boyle.name/projects/android-puzzles/

Downwell and Holedown are both fantastic games played in portrait. But I won't lie; lately I've fallen back into Marvel Snap and I live it. (Not love, live.) But never spent a dollar on it.

[-] original_reader@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

I forgot about Holedown. So addictive! I always wish it were longer.

[-] bravesilvernest@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago

Such a great one.

Big fan of Melvor Idle, Assembly Line 2, Mindustry, and Homequest. I've played all of these a couple of times and even redownloaded them all at one time or another.

[-] original_reader@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Never heard of Assembly Line 2. Thanks.

[-] sirimeow@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Slay the spire!

Edit: nvm I'm an idiot and forgot about "vertical" in your request. Its not, but I still recommend it because its a good game

[-] Concave1142@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Currently playing Block Blast as my time killer and loving it.
