Look at these sponsors! I wouldn't use Ladybird in 1750 BC.

Non-browser companies I don’t like are sponsoring a browser engine alternative so they don’t all end up getting hosed by Google’s lock-in.

As long as the end result is what I want I am alright with jerks I don’t like footing the bill if our separate self-interests are momentarily aligned.

This is a wait-and-see for me.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yeah. Corporate sponsorship for the purposes of "get us the hell out of this monopoly" is kinda how open source has worked so far.

Sometimes its fine. See: Linux

[-] daggermoon@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Thank you, an intelligent comment

[-] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 3 days ago

Damn, thats a really low quality copper sponsor

[-] shiftymccool@piefed.ca 23 points 3 days ago

Yeah, as if finding FOSS alternatives to mega-corp software wasn't hard enough, now i have to care about the politics of a sponsor's co-sponsor's ceo's husband's dog's groomer before I install? Pass

[-] zqps@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

I think this is a joke about the first copper-tier sponsor.

[-] Greg@lemmy.ca 64 points 3 days ago

This is a silly take. It's an open source project from a non profit creating a new browser option

[-] idegenszavak@sh.itjust.works 122 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)
[-] Greg@lemmy.ca 52 points 3 days ago

Swoosh 🤦‍♂️ thank you

[-] explodIng_lIme@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yeah the other side of this is that there is mandatory 1 sponsor and it is Alphabet/Google

Edit: read the list and noticed the primeagen is on there so I guess it must be evil

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

Agreed. I looked into this and it seems like an honest effort to try and prevent a total Chrome monopoly.

A fresh browser is a massive project. Web standards are massive, and complex, and growing.

It would be nice to see Firefox killing it, but they aren’t.

[-] carotte 14 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

there's another non-fascist browser rendering project yknow, with less hype around it but just as promising imo

~~and also it's made in rust so you know it's good~~

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The very first text on that page:

Servo aims to empower developers with a lightweight, high-performance alternative for embedding web technologies in applications.

That’s not quite the same as a browser trying to support web standards.

Though I do want to see servo succeed too.

And why is ladybird fascist?

[-] carotte 12 points 3 days ago

devs are charlie kirk stans, and consider(ed, they seem to have changed course on this, good) gender neutral pronouns to be "too political"

[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Great, find out they're supposedly not against gender neutral pronouns, only to know hear they're charlie Kirk stans. Source?

[-] carotte 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

admittedly "charlie kirk stan" was maybe not the best way to describe it (i got this from other people), he hasn't posted much about him (other than to mourn his death lol), but

Screenshot of a tweet by @awesomekling: In recent years I've attended multiple software conference talks that had unrelated extreme political rhetoric in slides, such as "fuck [name]" and "punch [group]". Whenever this happened, some of the audience would clap and cheer, I'd roll my eyes, and the talk would get back on topic. Fast-forward to today, and look at how many people in our industry are openly celebrating the murder of someone they decided was a "nazi" and "fascist". Turns out these people were more serious than I thought. As someone who's repeatedly been called a "nazi" and "fascist" myself for disagreements with far-left ideology, I know how easily those labels get thrown around. And honestly, this is making me seriously reconsider which conferences I attend. There's a hateful rot within our industry. It shouldn't be socially acceptable to cheer for murder. We need to do more than roll our eyes.

apparently he thinks the software industry has a nazi-hating problem??? lmao

i’m still wary of him. he doesn’t have a big thing to point to like DHH, but the way he speaks and the people he associates with (including, you guessed it, DHH) raises a ton of red flags

[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Yeah no, I'd rather stick with Firefox. We need another browser but not from a future fascist grifter.

[-] carotte 45 points 3 days ago

if something is sponsored by futo, shopify and 37signals???? run

i trust Ea-nāṣir more than i trust DHH

[-] halvar@lemy.lol 10 points 3 days ago

update me is this part of the joke or is there some problem with futo im unaware of

[-] carotte 28 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

futo collaborates with and platforms curtis yarvin, a self-described fascist

they also did a bunch of other shady bullshit which the article talks about, but which i don't consider to be as important

[-] halvar@lemy.lol 9 points 3 days ago

curtis yarvin sounds like the name of a star wars imperial officer the nazis are getting out of control

[-] veggibles@lemmy.wtf 3 points 3 days ago

Where were you during the Battle of Curtis Yarvin?

[-] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 days ago

Goddammit, now I have to find another keyboard for my phone. Any recommendations for one that isn't supported by fascists?

[-] carotte 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

i’ve switched to HeliBoard on my tablet!

i wouldn’t call it a drop-in replacement (i don’t think it has swipe-to-type or voice recognition for example, tho i could be wrong) but for me it works even better

[-] the_q@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 days ago

It does have swipe, but you need to download an extra thing iirc.

I use Unexpected Keyboard.

It's mainly made for programming or using Termux, and it makes some special characters more accessible than the classic keyboards. It also has a mechanic for typing special characters that makes it faster to type. And you can enable a compose key, which is something I love to see on a phone keyboard.

Unexpected doesn't have voice recognition though, but it can be enabled by installing a voice recognition app alongside the keyboard.

I use florisboard, it doesnt have built-in voice support but you can use a seperate app for that and more unfortunately it doesnt have corrections and recommendations. They are working on implementing them but even without that its by far the most solid keyboard ive found.

Can we stop giving a shit about stuff like this? Open source is arguably more important than a single peraon's political beliefs...

[-] veggibles@lemmy.wtf 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

WTF!? "Can we just get over allowing and promoting Nazis into this bar? What's important is that the beer is free"

What a disgusting sentiment to see upvoted on Lemmy.

as a trans woman i'd rather not promote and fund (indirectly, but still) the people who want people like me dead

i'd rather their white supremacy, misogyny and queerphobia not become the norm in open-source spaces, more than it already is...

[-] SatyrSack@quokk.au 9 points 3 days ago

FUTO is seemingly lead by an entirely unrelated toxic individual. But as for 37signals:

The open source web application framework Ruby on Rails was initially created by David Heinemeier Hansson for internal use at 37signals, before being publicly released in 2004.

[-] carotte 14 points 3 days ago

for further context on DHH, CEO and founder of 37signals: he also made omarchy, the infamous dodgy-personal-arch-config-turned-linux-distro, is in large part the reason why framework is in so much hot water right now, and the reason he's bad (and why we're mad at framework for collaborating with him) is he's an open white supremacist

[-] kazaika@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Damn thanks for explaining all that, i didnt know any of that

[-] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

framework is in so much hot water right now

Most people don't care.
And honestly, I understand Framework's position. They collaborate with about a dozen other distros.

[-] veggibles@lemmy.wtf 4 points 3 days ago

Except we do care, and we Framework is going to see this as we stop buying their products going forward.

Didn't he sell that dodgy copper way back when?

[-] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I work in the copper industry and can confirm we get shit sponsors.

[-] davidagain@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Content not viewable in your region.

Could you provide an alternate link? Or maybe use the image button to upload it to your instance so it's out of the control of some corporation?

(Imgur deleted a bunch of content for the crime of not having a paid subscription, and they geoblock my country because the data protection commission threatened them with a fine for selling children's browsing history and they'd rather take it out on users than simply filter the accounts they auto-tagged as children out of the data they were selling. We left reddit for a reason. Imgur is no less moneygrabbing.)

[-] muhyb@programming.dev 4 points 3 days ago

I know I need to get used to at least ImageBB but I forget all the time. In case the other reply also doesn't work, I uploaded to ImageBB as well. >>

[-] davidagain@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Thank you for taking the time to broaden access. It's appreciated.
