I want so badly to have been a fly on the wall for that meeting. But ultimately it does kind of make sense: they are both "anti-establishment" candidates in their own ways, and trump desperately needs a popularity boost.
As far as I can tell Mamdani doesn't really attack or even acknowledge his opponents unless he's forced to do so. So I imagine the meeting was all about how Mamdani wants to fix New York by matching New Jersey's tax rate and cleaning up the city council. I can see why Trump would try to ride that wave rather than fight it.
He is a master of the BIFF technique for dealing with narcissists for sure. Being friendly and disarming with people who think he's literally sub-human, while not giving ground, is no easy or common skill.
