Socialism is a buzzword that has been used in the US to attack anything remotely progressive that's happened in the last century.

When Social Security and the New Deal programs were introduced, they were called socialism

When the voting age was lowered to 18, it was called socialism

When the FMLA was passed, it was called socialism.

It's literally just a word that Republicans who don't want to support our communities use instead of just flat out admitting that they're anti human

Let's not pretend it's just republicans.

Any sources on this? I'd like to share with some relatives.

Edit : I wanted some more ammo for Thanksgiving coming up, so thank you for the help.

History? You can watch a new conservative calling anything the government does to help people socialism every day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Deal#Criticism

In 1934, Roosevelt defended himself against those critics in a "fireside chat":

[Some] will try to give you new and strange names for what we are doing. Sometimes they will call it 'Fascism', sometimes 'Communism', sometimes 'Regimentation', sometimes 'Socialism'. But, in so doing, they are trying to make very complex and theoretical something that is really very simple and very practical.... Plausible self-seekers and theoretical die-hards will tell you of the loss of individual liberty. Answer this question out of the facts of your own life. Have you lost any of your rights or liberty or constitutional freedom of action and choice?[279]

At the same time, there was an actual (failed) attempt at a fascist coup on Roosevelt's watch:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot

The Business Plot, also called the Wall Street Putsch[1] and the White House Putsch, was a political conspiracy in 1933 in the United States to overthrow the government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install Smedley Butler as dictator.

So, yeah. Fascists hate this stuff and will do anything to fight it, from name-calling to revolution.

Thanks, much appreciated!

It's funny how they're trying to paint him as a communist revolutionary or something, and in the process, just making him look even cooler.

[-] regdog@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago

Why is a comic strip 12 seconds long?

[-] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 7 points 5 days ago

It's a gif where in the last panel the angry bigot shakes a lot.

[-] regdog@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago
[-] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

No one wants to read a 15 second comic strip.

[-] mriormro@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago

Did you even attempt to visit the source?

[-] regdog@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Obviously not

[-] Lux 46 points 6 days ago

[-] toy_boat_toy_boat@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago

See, that's the thing.

People just don't seem to realize how important my opinion is. I did, like, research and stuff!

[-] unphazed@lemmy.world 15 points 5 days ago

If we don't attempt democratic socialism then capitalism will bring absolute poverty to the economy (we're already so close, but people aren't eating leather yet), which will lead to revolt, rebellion, and lots of death. Then a most likely scenario will be Communism, where things will likely look good at first, then quickly fall backwards. Then more revolt, then fractured states. We're about 50 years away from being the Northern States of America, with all kinds of squabbles, different laws, sketchy trade deals, etc. All this will likely end in the worst scenario: Texas is claimed by Mexico and Texans will all be refugees fleeing to other states.

[-] titanicx@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

Dude I think you've been drinking a little too much of the kool-aid, none of those scenarios would actually happen even within 50 years. Absolutely no way zero. If you think Mexico would become a more successful State than any part of the United States then you really are smoking some good shit. And the United States devolving to Communism within 50 years that is not even going to happen not even a little not even anyway no way no how.

[-] falseWhite@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

IKR, it's gonna happen much sooner. The way things are going right now, it will only take 10-20 years.

Even then, 20 years is very generous and it could be much less. It took only a few years for Germany to become fascist. History taught us that governments and ideologies can change VERY quickly.

[-] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 9 points 5 days ago

Ehem, as the kids say

"Cope and seethe"

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 33 points 6 days ago

It already has more gay and trans people than any other city in the US by numbers. Now they just need some socialism!

[-] CommissarVulpin@lemmy.world 29 points 6 days ago
[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 19 points 6 days ago

I think these people turn red usually in less than 12 seconds.

[-] kubica@fedia.io 22 points 6 days ago

Talking seriously, from a "centrist" point of view, worrying about that a "gay trans sociallist hellscape" makes no sense seeing how easy is for the right to get to power no matter how crazy it seems.

[-] sundray@lemmus.org 13 points 6 days ago

Credit where it's due though: Karen's got a pretty sweet flip 'do going on.

[-] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

Nice work, y'all. You pissed off the cons

[-] ZoopZeZoop@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago

Now, let's get them and Nick Cage in a plane!

[-] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 7 points 6 days ago

[-] Corridor8031@lemmy.ml 6 points 6 days ago

this would make me consider moving there

[-] devxyn@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Ok I agree with the sentiment but I hate the "observe this meme in which your side is portrayed as the ugly one and mine is portrayed as calm and collected". it looks like the type of stuff id see on facebook

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

The only thing inaccurate here is that repubs aren’t calling Mamdani a socialist- they’re calling him a communist.

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 5 points 6 days ago

To us, this is just a passing meme

To them, this is debate. They actually get upset over this kind of thing, it makes them feel like they're losing

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

In a way, I guess I agree; it’s not the wittiest analysis of the argument. Everyone SHOULD have topics they get angry about. What matters is which ones. Getting angry about feeding children is a sadly truthful analysis of conservatives right now.

Could lead to a funny comic where they compare reasons each was angry about the last NY mayoral election they lost.

It's pretty accurate when you see how mad useful idiots are that a servant of the ruling class didn't get elected.

Nothing pisses them off more than their abusers losing a bit of power.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 days ago

... I need panel 4 on my wall.

Useful idiots BTFO

[-] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago

Boy do I have news for you, it already is.
