Hi all, I'll keep t. is short. I've got a DB9 alloy build that I love. It uses the Aves Rails MAC11 upper. I've had issues with light strikes, failure to seat the round when cycling, and finally had my last straw. I noticed my firing pin was sticking. I took it into my LGS and they found a metal burr on the pin as well a small piece of the actual bolt which had sheered off. They had the grind down the firing pin.

I read through here and found some other posts about Aves Rails QC being questionable. They apparently don't chamfer the seating for the round, which is partly responsible for the failure to properly cycle.

Lesson learned - I've relegated my Aves Rails MAC11 upper to cheap builds. I ordered a Velocity Firearms upper for my db9.

TL;DR: Avoid Aves Rails for MAC11 uppers. Their QC is trash.

in a community built around diy guns, it's amazing to me how low people's bar is for troubleshooting around here, or awareness of how this stuff works. the mac uppers were never designed to take the beating that ar hammer's put on them. It causes issues with all of them.

From their website:

Internally we have developed an improved extractor with geometry that provides a repeatable and reliable extraction of spent cases. Also included is our already very popular upgraded firing pin. This firing pin is turned from 17-4 Stainless Steel and heat treated to condition H900 making it the strongest available firing pin for the mac 11 platform.

What would you propose I do? Because making condescending remarks with no solution is pretty useless.

These vendors aren't megacorps or some abstract thing, they're people in the community. Without feedback in helpful ways, they don't know what's going on. AVES in particular has shown they're willing to take feedback and work through development hurdles. People here rely on them to get these parts and kits, but then turn around and shit on the vendors at the first opportunity. It's just stupid to handle this stuff like whiny children. It's not like there's millions to be made in all of this, they're not doing it because they want to make bank.

the pin will still need replacing more frequently, because in use with an ar fcg, it's under far more stress than in the original design. In addition, there's no way of knowing what might be happening in your lower to cause slight changes in geometry that are adding to the wear. the extraction issues, while valid, could have been brought to their attention. You came here to disparage the maker, which when we're such a small community, you could have gone straight to them to address it. I've got no tie to aves, but man, seeing the posts from people lately about different vendor complaints just sucks. You didn't come here for a solution, you already relegated it to secondary use. You came here to complain. That's why you got condescension.

So you think it's reasonable that the pin needs to be replaced w/ <200 rounds through it?

I'll just throw in that mine came non operational; the two studs that hold the picatinny section on weren't ground down properly in the reciever and  caused the bolt to not move. In their defense I  emailed and got a response like an hr later giving me details on how to return it.

Yeah the velocity ones are pretty good, I got two of them. One of the cheapest ones you can get too.

Velocity uppers have shitty firing pins bro. Ive had 2 break on me after just a few rounds. The one that came with the upper as well as the warranty replacement they sent me. It's their temper.

Get the JC arms firing pin. The guy reprofiled the firing pin to be more reliable and his temper is on point. I think he also offers a lifetime warranty.

See, that's weird, cuz I'm 2k rounds through one of my VMACs without a break. When did you purchase yours? Seems like a they may have strengthened them around a year ago

u/twatwaffle32 · 2024-05-29 17:48:51 UTC · score 3

The last one they sent me was probably a little over a year ago.

Idk if they updated their firing pins or not as I emailed them again asking for a 3rd firing pin and they basically told me to kick rocks.

If they had upgraded their firing pin or got a more reliable batch in you think they would be willing to send one to an unsatisfied customer to make things right.

Maybe, I'm unsure of their complaint department, cuz I've never had to talk to them. I bought one in May and one in June last year and have had zero issues. I believe JC arms also sells upgraded firing pins singularly like Aves does. That's the only Mac part I would buy from Aves, just based off reviews. Seems like they made a great pin but a subpar upper

Not anymore, I think they changed the pins. Though I could be wrong and mine could break tomorrow lol. I got one from JC just in case but I’ve fired about 500rnds out of my DB9 alloy with VMac upper and no issues at all not a light strike not a failure to feed nothing but smooth shooting.

u/99taws6 · 2024-05-28 19:39:58 UTC · score 2

This is correct. My first vmac I saw mushrooming and got a JC pin and no issues. The 2nd one came with a better pin.

I’m glad I ordered when they made the new pins, I got the JC just incase and went to the range and was thinking “why isn’t my firing pin breaking” lol but it never did.

I’ll throw out JC Arms as a great alternative. Was also the first to bring back extended length mac barrels, and is working on a mac upper that will feed from double stack/double feed mags.

I could be wrong, but I think AVES is retailing JC's uppers. He has upgraded firing pins available for people using the AR trigger packs, because they're known to go bad with those.

You are wrong. Aves is building their own uppers.

For the bullet not seating, it's because the extractor spring is too stiff and won't let the extractor pop over the rim of the casing. I had that problem from another brand as well. I just drank beer, watched Tv, and constantly pressed down in the rear of the extractor. Probably 1000+ times. Or you can probably take the spring out and trim it up a bit

I wasn't a fan of the velocity arms personally. It wasn't awful but it definitely needed some light sanding and a different firing pin when I bought it. I hot a JC customs one and it has worked flawlessly.

Q.C definitely lacking 😑 I still haven't heard back from them for a firing pin that broke after a few mags. I ordered another from k.a.k and, while awaiting, made one from a hex key that's still kicking 🙃

Nice! I couldn't remember if KAK sold that rendition or not. Stock MAC pin doesn't have the radius and are more prone to snapping.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I'll have to keep an eye on the other I have from them "aves" then also. the first - definitely snapped after a magazine or two. The second hasn't been fired much besides test fire after build. I have the spare from kak just in case it does. The hex key pin I made with some dremel work has been doing better than expected as it was a temp quick fix while awaiting a replacement, but the build runs mags on E in like 2-3 seconds without breaking a sweat I didn't even think to change it for now

Small radius. I'll send a pic of the broke avis one and a replacement I got from kak. They're definitely using different metals

Sorry to hear this friend I had the same issue but didn't even get to take mine out before the pin sheared. I ordered a replacement from JC and its been great through dry fire and around 2000-2200 rds. The next weak point from the aves upper is the buffer. Mine is pretty much shot after the rds mentioned above.
