And of course Liverpool pronounced live-a contains the Liver Building. Pronounced Live-er

Makes total sense.

[-] ODuffer@lemmy.world 23 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The city is pronounced liver, rhymes with river. Source - I live there. It's confusing, as the building is indeed pronounced differently.

[-] gmtom@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Those things are actually pronounced the same in most British accents.

[-] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

You do know that "live" is pronounced two different ways, right?

In the german books it is Entenhausen (duckhouse).

Hier wäre Mannheim komisch...

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 17 points 2 months ago

In Danish it’s called Andeby which translates to: Ducktown.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 months ago

No Danish town called Mandeby, though 🤷

[-] cute_astronaut@feddit.dk 6 points 2 months ago

Shouldn't it be menneskeby?

We do have a Manderup, and even a Kvinder up.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

Do we have ones called Manderip and Manderap, though?

[-] cute_astronaut@feddit.dk 4 points 2 months ago

That's a missed opportunity, we should have

[-] RVGamer06@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 months ago

In Italian it's Paperopoli (Duckopolis)

[-] carotte 16 points 2 months ago

in french it’s either donaldville or canardville (duckville) depending on the media and translation

but while finding this, I learned that french wikipedia has a page for the town (english wikipedia doesn’t) and it has a whole infobox as if it were a real town lmao

Screenshot of the french Wikipedia infobox for Donaldville, showing information such as location (Calisota, United States), demonym (Donaldvillois), population (1'300'000), coordinates, date of founding (1579) and date of receiving municipality status (1848), and position on the map.

[-] jack_of_sandwich@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 2 months ago

The whole town is named after Donald, but he's just some loser schlub....

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

It's gotta be a lot older than him, too. Maybe it was some other Donald.

[-] Canadian_Cabinet@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago

For Spanish its either Patoburgo (Duckburg) or Patópolis (Duckopolis) in Spain, Patolandia (Duckland) in the Americas

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

Wouldn’t it be Duckhouses?

[-] Xande@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago

Hausen is a no longer used word for nameing settlements. It can describe a multiple house village or a hamlet. Houses is plural. The plural of Haus is Häuser.

Used as a verb "hausen" is a derogatory term for living in a chaotic dirty and unclean way.

In an alternate universe, some New Yorkers live in Dinohattan

I thought it was at least named after a Duck, like the McDuck family. But Rosaverse says the founder is called Cornelius Coot and he named it Duckburg for no particular reason.

Side note: Cornelius' beak looks much more like those of confirmed geese like Gladstone Gander, so I'm not even sure he's a duck at all.

Second side note: It's weird that Donald's family tree is filled with waterfowl of all different species, but no dogs (which seems to be 80% of Duckburg's population) or other species. Do they have egg groups like Pokemon?

He could perhaps be a coot ? It's also a waterfowl

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coot

[-] Hoimo@ani.social 2 points 2 months ago

That pun went over my head. He doesn't look like a coot though, but geese and ducks look alike in Duck-style, so maybe coots do too.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

but no dogs (which seems to be 80% of Duckburg’s population)

Probably had duck flight back in the 60s when all those dog people moved in.

As someone who comes from Manchester, I was a little confused at this post for a moment. Love my city.

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 months ago

Bang on, r kid.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 months ago

I can't imagine anything living in Manchester...

Manchester is an amazing city and has an amazing history too; so much has come from it or been created by people in Manchester it’s crazy.

We have awesome public transport, awesome people, and shit weather

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah I know, just doing my duty as a Liverpool fan 😉

Funnily enough Liverpool is another great city with a storied history. Nothing on Manchester like.

Someone’s gotta support Liverpool I guess.

Someone’s gotta support Liverpool I guess.

Yeah, it's nowhere near as fun right now as it usually is, that much is for sure! 😄

I've been through much worse, though: my timing was such that I became a Liverpool fan 4 years into the 30 year league title drought!

Yeah 3 losses on the bounce now but I’m sure you’ll come back and kick our ass on Sunday 😂.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

I mean yeah, we have to. It's one thing to slip up against mighty Galatasaray, but if we don't beat YOUR lot, we're never going to hear the end of it! 😛

Nor should you the form we are in.

Except Duckburg isn't mostly inhabited by ducks.

[-] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

There are 2 rats per capita in Prague (I imagine other cities have a similar situation) and an uncountable population of smaller species. Of course, they're not equals like in Duckburg.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Guess Dogburg just didn't sound as good.
