TIL that a Spanish mid (at best) beer makes it to the UK!
At least it's not Cruzcampo, I guess.
San Miguel is Filipino in origin.
Plus, it's made under licence in the UK now.
Funnily enough, Cruz is actually better in the UK than Spain. I'm putting it down to the water quality in Edinburgh is better than Seville.
Apparently (according to wikipedia), San Miguel was founded by a group of Spanish monks who decided to open the first beer business in SE Asia. Specifically in the San Miguel district of the then Spanish-controlled Manila.
After Spain lost the war there, they moved both the company and the production back to Spain, although in some places like US San Miguel beer that's sold is done under the Filipino brand instead of the Spanish one. However, I'd argue that out of pure convenience, the one sold in the UK should be the Spanish (or maybe UK produced under the Spanish brand) and not Filipino one. But that's just speculation, as I don't like that beer and I don't live in the UK to corroborate this.
Edit: interesting the bit about cruz tasting better there. In Andalusia, they call that beer "dog pee" and only Sevillians defend it out of pride.
I know the Philippines were under Spanish rule when it was made back in 1890 but I'd still class it as Filipino.
Out of the mainstream generic beers in Spain I left Estrella Galicia and Mahou Cinco Estrellas.
There's a few craft beer bars around but I end up paying UK prices.
Just give me a caña on a terrace on a hot day for under €2 please
I wasn't discussing it, just reporting my findings. My only point to argue is that since now they are two different "san miguel" brands, the one you are drinking there is the one coming from Spain.
From the mainstream brands, I'd recommend (on top of those two which are really good), Alhambra. The 1922 is probably the best of them all.
Also: yeah, I'd love a caña under 2€ here too. In Italy you can't find a beer (let alone a decent one) under 3€, Spain has a really cheap alcohol!!
