I'm just learning about the Steam Machine OS capabilities now, and apparently it uses a Flatpak system for the Steam OS apps, right? Does anyone know if that includes programs like an FTP client? Or, where I can find a list of apps that Steam OS will be able to run. Curious to find out just how capable of a PC replacement the Steam Machine will be.

Hey there,

yes. You can do that - but not the quick way.
Firstly: Yes, I am aware of what the founder did with his money - and I am not a fan of that. I do have a rest time on my account and want to use it up. It's paid in the end anyway already.

The easiest to do this is going to the Mullvad website and log in with your number.
Go to Linux downloads, and you'll easily find the "WireGuard" option - as you cannot install Mullvad VPN on SteamOS out of the box.

After creating a key and choosing the server you want to use, download the configuration file. Right-click the Wi-Fi / Internet symbol in the taskbar and go to network settings. Add a new connection and upload the configuration file into it.

In your original connection you can choose to automatically connect or not. I decided not to - I just need it for… specific reasons… :D

Disclaimer: Be aware using a VPN or other technique to bypass your region to get cheaper prices for games, Steam will ban once they caught anyone doing that.

Edit: Added VPN to title as there is a community project for the Mullvad Browser.

Hey there,

I got my Machine finally Yesterday. As I am Not as fortunate to get my hands on a Steam Controller so far, I plugged in my Pro 2 from 8bitdo.

Wired in the beginning. Cool enough, works Like a charm.

The only issue: To Connect it to Bluetooth Afterwards, you need something else to actually start the pairing. I Hope that there will be a better solution in future.

Anyways. That Controller works perfectly well and is recognized as Xbox Controller. To Access the menu, If you do Not have a Xbox themed by 8bitdo, you can Press the "Heart" Button.

I'm Happy With that.

This means I'll have two controllers now so I can test multiplayer.

"Update (07/07/26): The Reddit user with the inoperable Steam Machine was able to get it working again the next day by leaving the device unplugged and then turning it on again and leaving it, while a Valve employee reached out with advice for anyone facing similar issues to get to the bottom of the issue more rapidly.

Interestingly, the Valve rep mentioned that the lightbar codes are reversed from what they intended, meaning the code that ought to indicate "GPU failure" instead means "memory training failed" - which explains how leaving the machine unplugged (to clear the CMOS) and then starting it again and leaving it alone fixed the issue. The Valve support doc doesn't seem to reflect this at present."

Steam support reacted to a request by a user with the instruction to unplug the Machine, plug it back in later, hold the power button for around 6 seconds to launch the recovery menu.

I am awaiting the machine and should get it tomorrow.
One of the biggest questions, after plugging it in: What is the first game to download and play.

On my side it will either be Final Fantasy 8 Remastered or Chrono Trigger. I know, kind of retro, but hey :D

But I'm interested in your first pick?
